Dick Haymes (September 13, 1918 – March 28, 1980) was one of the most popular American male vocalists of the 1940s and early 1950s.
He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His Irish-born mother, Marguerite Haymes (1894-1987), was a well-known vocal coach and instructor. He became the vocalist in a number of big bands, worked in Hollywood on radio and in many films throughout the forties and fifties.
He never became a United States citizen and avoided military service during World War II by asserting his non-belligerent status as a citizen of Argentina, which was neutral. Years later (1955), this act of his nearly caused his deportation to Argentina on an unrelated technicality in immigration law. During World War II, he was briefly detained at Ellis Island.
Haymes was married six times and had six children. His most famous marriages were to film actresses Joanne Dru (1941-1949) and Rita Hayworth (1953-1955). His daughter Stephanie Haymes was married to Sir Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin
He died in Los Angeles from lung cancer, at the age of 61.
You're Just in Love

I smell blossoms and the trees are bare,
All day long I seem to walk on air,
I wonder why, I wonder why ?
I keep tossing in my sleep at night,
And what's more Ive lost my appetite,
Stars that used to twinkle in the skies,
I wonder why ?
You don't need analyzin
It is not so surpisin
That you feel very strange but nice!
Your heart goes pitter patter
I know just what's the matter
Because Ive been there once or twice!
Put your head on my shoulder
You need someone whos older
A rub-down with a velvet glove!
There is nothing you can take
To relieve that pleasant ache
Youre not sick, you're just in love!
< repeat verse and chorus simultaneously >
Now you know why!
Now I know why!
Im just in love!
The song You're Just In Love by Dick Haymes has an interesting take on the feeling of love. The singer describes how he hears singing and smells blossoms but there is no one around and the trees are bare. He walks on air and is unable to sleep at night, losing his appetite as well. The stars seem to twinkle in his eyes and he has an overall sense of wonder as he tries to understand why he's feeling that way.
The chorus explains that these feelings of love are not surprising and that they can make a person feel strange but nice. The heart starts beating erratically and the singer knows the symptoms well as he's been there once or twice before. He offers comfort in the form of an older person to confide in and a velvet-gloved rubdown. The singer ultimately concludes that these feelings are not an illness but simply a part of being in love.
The lyrics of the song depict the feeling of infatuation and how it can affect a person's senses and emotions. The singer's description of hearing singing and smelling blossoms that aren't physically present is a representation of how love can be all-encompassing and seemingly unreal. The song also highlights the physical effects of love, such as difficulty sleeping and loss of appetite.
