I'll String Along With You
Dick Powell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All my life I've waited for an angel
But no angel ever came along
Then one happy afternoon I met you
And my heart began to sing a song
Somehow, I mistook you for an angel
But now I'm glad that I was wrong

You may not be an angel
'Cause angels are so few
But until the day that one comes along
I'll string along with you

I'm looking for an angel
To sing my love song to
And until the day that one comes along
I'll sing my song to you

For every little fault that you have
Say, I've got three or four
The human little faults you do have
Just make me love you more

You may not be an angel
But still I'm sure you'll do
So until the day that one comes along
I'll string along with you

For every little fault that you have
Say, I've got three or four
The human little faults you do have, honey
Just make me love you more

You may not be an angel
But still I'm sure you'll do

So until the day that one comes along
I'll string along with you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dick Powell's I'll String Along with You are about finding love and companionship, even if it isn't perfect. The singer explains that they have been waiting for an angel, but one has never come. However, they are content with being with their partner, even though they know their partner is not an angel. In fact, the singer admits to mistaking their partner for an angel at first, but they realize that their partner's human "little faults" make them love them even more. The lyrics capture a sentiment of accepting imperfection in relationships and finding joy in the company of another person.

The first stanza of the lyrics establishes the singer's longing for an angel, which represents a perfect partner, but the second stanza reveals that the singer is happy to be with their current partner. The third stanza emphasizes the partner's human flaws, which are seen as endearing rather than detracting from their worth. The final stanza sums it up by reiterating that even though the partner is not an angel, they are a suitable companion until an angel does come along.

Overall, the lyrics of I'll String Along with You are sentimental and demonstrate a sense of contentment and acceptance of imperfections in a romantic relationship.

Dick Powell was the ultimate Renaissance man. He did it all, and he did it far better than most. Grateful that so much of his legacy has survived.

Love Ginger and her unique, stellar voice...she's so sweet and such a superb actress, I add!😉At 2:03 she gets close, adoringly looking at his face, pleading that she sees his value and worth. At 2:08 she closes her eyes and nodds her head, assuring him that she loves him and "perfect" means nothing. Their voices blend beautifully. Oh 2:20, Ginger's deeper tone...😚 Dick Powell, what a voice! It's so cute how he is tickled pink and sort of giddy when Ginger sings with him...😗 He IS serenading an angel.😉

You may not be an angel? Well, Dick Powell and Ginger Rogers are as close to sounding like two angels as anyone can. What a great song.

It'a good thing that moviegoers during the Great Depression had class entertainment like this to get them through it.

Ginger comes to the rescue once again. She is marvelous. Her dress is lovely. I always wanted to be able to wear clothes as well as Ginger does but I could never pull it off. She new how to wear clothes to their and hers best advantage. Thanks for the video.

Beautiful song. No one could put a ballad over like Dick Powell. A classic Warren and Rubin song, and the great musical arrangements of the 1930s (easy on the drums, cymbals and horns).

Ginger was a fun, classy lady. Miss her and many others from that great era. I was blessed with the experience of seeing her many times along with her contemporaries like Mary Martin, Kaye Ballard and Ruby Keeler. Great gals who I knew many years after the limelight and glory; not as a personal friend but as the guy who got to ask them about the temperature of their steaks and to offer pepper on their salads... Great table talk in those days!
