Before he was famous he was an apprentice welder. The subject of a well-known Irish catchphrase - "spit on me Dickie", a phrase that took off in Belfast in the 60s and spread all over the country. Between 1963 and 1977 Dickie and the Miami Showband had eight top ten hits.
Dickie Rock and the Miami were the First Irish Artists to Go straight in to The Number One Spot with "There's Always Me" in 1965.
He came 4th in the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest with a song entitled "Come Back to Stay".
He remained as popular as ever after a career spanning more than 40 years. Following a third RTÉ documentary (one in the 60's another in the 80's and another done in 2006) about Dickie and his place at the forefront of the legendary Irish showband scene, his loyal fans throughout the country have been clamouring for a chance to relive those glory days.
One of Ireland’s most successful singers ever, Dickie had 25 Irish hits from 1963 to 1983, surpassed only by the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, David Bowie and the Rolling Stones. During his time with the Miami Showband, Dickie attracted the kind of mass hysteria normally reserved for the Beatles and more recently boybands such as Westlife.

Remember seeing Dickie and Miami at ballroom in Cashel when I was in Rockwell hotel school. Spent many years in hotels in Canada and now back in Ireland. Will visit Toronto ( Oakville) to visit family later this month. Loved Canada and Miami aswell! Best to you and your family from home!

Sadly missed his music lives on forever. Met Dickie visiting his relatives next door to my house when I was a teenager he was nice and had his dog Kim with him. Seen him in many places over the years. And never will forget him. God bless you rest in peace ❤
