My Lover's Gone
Dido Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My lover's gone
His boots no longer by my door
He left at dawn
And as I slept I felt him go
Returns no more
I will not watch the ocean
My lover's gone
No earthly ships will ever bring him home again
Bring him home again

My lover's gone
I know that kiss will be my last
No more his song
The tune upon his lips has passed
I sing alone
While I watch the ocean
My lover's gone
No earthly ships will ever bring him home again
Bring him home again

My lover's gone
His boots no longer by my door
He left at dawn
And as I slept I felt him go
Returns no more
I will not watch the ocean
My lover's gone

No earthly ships will ever bring him home again
Bring him home again

Overall Meaning

Dido’s song ‘My Lover’s Gone’ appears in her 1999 debut album No Angel. The song is a somber, slow, and melancholic tune where she describes the despair and bleakness in her life after the departure of her lover. The opening line “My lover’s gone, his boots no longer by my door” sets the stage for the rest of the song, with Dido mourning the loss of her lover.

The lyric “He left at dawn, and as I slept I felt him go, returns no more” suggests that he left in secret, without saying goodbye. Dido’s voice is void of emotion as she sings, which seems to indicate that she has lost all hope for the future. The second verse repeats the first, but this time she adds “I know that kiss will be my last”. The sense of finality here is gut-wrenching, and the silence that follows her voice shows that she recognizes that there’s nothing more to say.

The final verse repeats the first two, yet this time her voice is more powerful, as if she's ready to accept the loss. The words “I will not watch the ocean, my lover's gone, no earthly ships will ever bring him home again” are so bleak, they convey the sense that there's no hope for a future together. The repetition of the same verse again and again emphasizes the incredible pain of the woman who lost her lover, and the lengthy pauses between each verse heighten the gravity of loss.
