Stoned
Dido Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And we make love, it seems a little desolate
It's hard sometimes not to look away
And think what's the point
When I'm having to hold this fire down
If you won't let me fall for you
Then you won't see the best that I would love to do for you
'cause I'm bored of hanging out in your cold
When I feel loved baby, I join the road
And the world moves with me
When I feel lost I just slip away
Silently, quietly take my things and go
And think what's the point
Think where's the hope we're coming home
If you won't let me fall for you
Then you won't see the best that I would love to do for you
Instead you will be missing me when I go
'Cause I'm bored of hanging out in your cold
If you find one day
Find some freedom and relief
And with this freedom maybe
Maybe you will find some peace
And with this baby
I hope it brings you back to me, bring you home, take me home
If you won't let me fall for you
Then you won't see the best that I would love to do for you
Instead you will be missing me when I go
Ccause I'm bored of hanging out in your cold
The lyrics to Dido’s song “Stoned” depict a relationship that seems to have lost its spark. The song starts off with the analogy of being “stoned and drunk” while making love that feels “a little desolate”. It almost seems as though the singer is trying to force a flame that just won’t ignite, as she muses on “what’s the point” and feels as though she is “having to hold this fire down”.
As the song continues, it becomes clear that the singer feels unfulfilled in this relationship and is yearning for something more. She longs to “feel loved” and to “join the road” with that person. But when she feels lost or disconnected, she simply slips away quietly and wonders if there is any point in trying to come back to a place that feels cold and uninviting.
Overall, the lyrics to “Stoned” speak to the complex emotions that can come with trying to make a relationship work when the chemistry just isn’t there. The song captures the feeling of holding onto something that’s slipping away and the struggle to figure out whether to keep fighting for it or to simply let go.

Hey Dido. Gotta thank you for being a part of my recovery from bowel cancer. Every morning when I had radiation therapy, I listened to your song "Stoned" Absolutely brilliant because it had a long intro, and while the drum beat was going on to start with it, obviously no words, so I created my own....."The cancer in my body's disappearing disappearing. And it did ! Had chemo as well and my favourite other song of yours was about someone in India now, how sad I am that I can't name your song that is my second favourite of all time !
