Africa, a woman
nonne really knows her name Africa, and anyway we drain the juice from her vains She is black And her curls are the theads Of centruries
Higher, she wants higher
Africa, how depp the wells of dark muddy water Africa, how far does she have to go thought floods of infected Green is mixing with red Laying ill on the world's bed
Higher, she wants higher And the enemy In her bed She is killing Thought her ego
The lyrics to Die Happy's song "Africa" is a poignant and emotive commentary on the exploitation and abuse of the African continent. The song describes Africa as a woman whose name is unknown, yet she is drained of her resources and lifeblood. She is black, with curls that are the threads of centuries, symbolizing the rich history and culture of the African people.
The song goes on to highlight the struggles faced by Africa, such as deep wells of dark muddy water and floods of infected green mixing with red. These lines portray the environmental problems and the spread of diseases that afflict the continent. The chorus repeats the phrase "Higher, she wants higher," conveying not only the aspirations of the African people for a better life but also the pitiful state in which they find themselves.
The song ends with a stark image of Africa fraught with conflict and struggling through self-inflicted pain. The enemy is in her bed, and she is killing through her ego. This line hints at the internal problems that most African countries face, such as corruption, tribalism, and ethnic strife.
Overall, Die Happy's "Africa" is a stark reminder of the challenges that Africa faces as a continent, but it also highlights the strength, resilience, and beauty of its people.
