Enter Sandman
Die Krupps Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Say your prayers, little one
Don't forget, my son
To include everyone

Tuck you in, warm within
Keep you free from sin
Till the sandman he comes
Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight

Exit light, enter night
Take my hand
We're off to never, never land

Something's wrong, shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren't snow white

Dreams of war, dreams of liars
Dreams of dragon's fire
And the things that will bite

Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight

Exit light, enter night
Take my hand
We're off to never, never land

Now I lay me down to sleep
Pray the Lord, my soul to keep
If I die before I wake
Pray the Lord, my soul to take

Hush, little baby, and don't say a word
And never mind that noise you heard
It's just a beast under your bed
In your closet, in your head

Exit light, enter night
Grain of sand

Exit light, enter night

Take my hand
We're off to never, never land

Overall Meaning

The opening lyrics of "Enter Sandman" by Die Krupps from their 1993 album "A Tribute to Metallica" speak about a parent's protective nature over their child. The song begins with a call to prayer; the singer tells a child to say their prayers before going to bed, and asks them to pray for everyone they know. The child is then tucked into bed and the singer promises to protect them from sin until the sandman comes. However, the tone of the song shifts in the second verse, with heavy thoughts and dark dreams that suggest a disturbing nature of the world. The lyrics describe dreams of war, lies, and dragon's fire, and the fearsome things that come out at night.

The song's chorus refers to "Exit light, enter night" which can be interpreted in different ways, but it can be seen as a reference to the cyclical nature of life and death, with the light representing life and night representing death. The singer then takes the child's hand and they go to "never, never land," which is likely a reference to the Peter Pan story and its depiction of a place where one never ages and there are no responsibilities. The song ends with a lullaby, a reworking of the classic nighttime prayer where the child is urged to sleep peacefully while being assured that any noises they might hear are nothing to worry about.

Die Krupps were writing music before Metallica even existed.

That's a lot of close mindedness there, buddy. Bands like Die Krupps with Metal Machine Music, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, all set the stage for 21st Industrial. It's like saying 70's metal/hard rock sucked even though they set the stage for groups like Metallica and Motley Crue.

Love this album - own it from way back and it improves on the original.

Frans

Speechless and in agreement.

Dr. Rock

Why are people complaining about who was first and they ruined this and that?! It's music and peoples choice to like what they want. BTW Metallica loves what Die Krupps did!

ArviSamuli
