Different For Girls
Dierks Bentley [feat. Elle King] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She don't throw any t-shirt on and walk to a bar
She don't text her friends and say, I gotta get laid tonight
She don't say, it's okay, I never loved him anyway
She don't scroll through her phone just looking for a Band-Aid

It's different for girls when their hearts get broke
They can't tape it back together with a whiskey and Coke
They don't take someone home and act like it's nothing
They can't just switch it off every time they feel something
A guy gets drunk with his friends and he might hook up
Fast forward through the pain, pushing back when the tears come on
But it's different for girls

She don't sleep all day and leave the house a wreck
She don't have the luxury to let herself go
She won't call just to cuss from a wall, she can punch
When the going gets tough, yeah, the guys they can just act tough

It's different for girls when their hearts get broke
They can't tape it back together with a whiskey and Coke
They don't take someone home and act like it's nothing
They can't just switch it off every time they feel something
A guy gets drunk with his friends and he might hook up
Fast forward through the pain, pushing back when the tears come on
But it's different for girls

It's different for girls
Nobody said it was fair
When love disappears, they can't pretend it was never there

A guy gets drunk with his friends and he might hook up
Fast forward through the pain, pushing back when the tears come on
When the going gets tough, yeah, the guys they can just act tough
So tough

It's different for girls

Overall Meaning

"Different For Girls" is a reflective song sung by Dierks Bentley in which he talks about how gender affects how people deal with heartbreak differently. The lyrics of the song highlight the stark distinction between the way men and women process their emotions after a break-up.

The song starts with the line "She don't throw any t-shirt on and walk to a bar," where the singer points out that women don't go to bars to sleep with someone after a break-up like men. The next line "She don't text her friends and say, I gotta get laid tonight" indicates how men have a more casual approach to sex than women. The song goes on with the lyrics, "She don't say, it's okay, I never loved him anyway. She don't scroll through her phone just looking for a Band-Aid," to convey how women don't just brush off their emotions like men after a break-up.

The chorus emphasizes the difference in the way men and women handle heartbreak. It makes the listener understand that for girls, it's not okay to act like nothing has happened. They don't take someone home, sleep with them, and then pretend like it never happened. They cannot just switch off their feelings. In contrast, men can just forget things quickly and act tough.

This song definitely doesn't get the attention it deserves. I'd like to see Elle blow up, she's great in my opinion.

@xxsatinangelxx

I don't think the song is about guys not feeling anything, I think the songs about guys being better at hiding it and instead of letting themselves feel it, they usually hide it under bad behaviour and alcohol, but it's still there and they're still feeling it just as strong as girls do!

@KraypayJR

Yeah but I'm sure not all of them hide it.

@iwellbreastfed

more like being forced to hide it

@BloodDragonH

+Kra88ypa77yJR and not all girls express it either. But if we are gonna be that picky there is no topic we can do a song on. I'm just saying

@KraypayJR

Humaam eXile There's tons of topics you can do a song on without offending people tf you talking about.

@BloodDragonH

+Kra88ypa77yJR That's not what I meant or said now was it? I said you can't do a song if the reasoning the topic is frowned upon is because not everyone acts like what the topic is portraying. Not everyone does act like one another so there's no one way to unite everyone that's just the fact of the matter. In this case him saying girls show their pain and guys try to surpress it as much as they can may not be accurate for everyone obviously but it's accurate for some people as some might be the opposite of what their genders is representing in this video. Now generalising is not the best thing to do this generalisation might just be what these singers have experienced. Even I mostly have girl friends who take time alone to mourn their loss and I have guys who try to distract themselves with other thing rather than deal with the pain. Majority of my crowd is like this but I do have the friends that is the exact opposite as well.

It's true. When love disappears you can't pretend it was never there.
