There is something undeniably captivating about South African duo Digby and The Lullaby. Perhaps it is their introspective honesty and uncomplicated melodies, or perhaps it’s the fact that their journey as a singer-songwriter duo swept them off their own feet and down the aisle. Most fans and critics however, think it’s simply that these two complement each other perfectly. From Cape Town to New York, Rouchelle Hubsch (piano and vocals) and Darren Peens (guitar and vocals) have cast their indie-folk spell on audiences everywhere. Digby and The Lullaby have a flair for intimate performances and single out the theatre as their favourite place to play. “Theatres are irresistible”, smiles Rouchelle - “it makes our connection with the audience so real and tangible.”
Digby and The Lullaby released their debut album ‘The Somewhere Wind’ in 2014. It was produced in New York by Kieran Kelly (Angus and Julia Stone, Better Than Ezra, Sufjan Stevens).
Their live performances to date include shows at Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town, The Chaplin in Port Elizabeth, Googies in New York, The Rhumbelow Theatre in Durban, Potters Place Jeffreys Bay, The Cash Store in Port Elizabeth and for three years running, the prestigious Hilton Arts Festival in Durban where extra seating had to be put in after their first performance.
Fleur du Lys’ theatre manager, Ralph Piaden remarked that Digby and The Lullaby were "the most complimented act" in his theatre throughout the festival. Graham Ward (drummer for Paul McCartney, Tom Jones and Ray Charles) puts it best however, when he says, “The joy of hearing these two stays with you long after you leave.”

I tried to find it on my own
Hearts try to make it through the winter freeze
But all I really wanted was your all
All I really wanted was your all
Shotgun, I'm gonna find what I believe
Somehow l make it on my own
Cause we had what we wanted all along
We had what we wanted all along
I try but I think its going slow
The clocks are ticking now
You try but you break it on your own
And you far from ready
I'm done tryna fake it all alone
The clocks are ticking, the tapes are rolling, but Im not ready yet
The tapes are rolling but I'm not ready
Hearts go collapsing through the blizzard freeze
But when we're apart we're not alone
I know we'll make it through the winter freeze
Cause we had what we wanted all along
We had what we wanted all along
I try but I think its going slow
The clocks are ticking now
You try but you break it on your own
And you're far from ready
I'm done tryna fake it, all alone
The clocks are ticking, the tapes are rolling, but I'm not ready yet
The tapes are rolling but I'm not ready
I tried and I made it on my own
The clocks stopped ticking and
You knew you were never on your own
And they found you ready
We're done tryna fake it, we're not alone
The clocks stopped ticking
The tapes stopped rolling, they found us ready, yeah
Oh, the tapes stopped rolling, they found us ready
The lyrics in Digby And The Lullaby's song Shotgun describe the struggles of trying to make it through tough times without the support of a loved one. The metaphor of collapsing hearts in the summer breeze and the winter freeze shows how difficult it can be to hold on when things are challenging. The singer tells us that they tried to find their way on their own but ultimately realized that all they really wanted was their loved one's support.
The idea of "Shotgun" presents itself as a plan to find what the singer believes in, suggesting that they will find their way through the struggles together. The lyrics indicate that both the singer and their loved one have had moments of frustration where they feel unprepared or not ready for what is to come. However, the end result sees them finding each other and no longer being alone during difficult times.
In summary, the song Shotgun is about the struggle of facing difficult times alone, but realizing that having the support of a loved one is all that they really need in order to make it through.
