My thoughts on both versions:

Disk Version:
+Being my DVD player.
+Easier to play PS4 games.
+Second option to go digital (if certain games are on sale)
-$500 is expensive.
-SSD is pretty pricey.

It's gonna take a while for me to adjust (I grew up with Nintendo handhelds. 4K is pretty high.)

Digital version:
+Sleek design.
+$400 isn't exactly cheaper, but it's a bit friendly.
-Going digital is my only option.
-Eventually, I'll have to upgrade my storage once I reach a high amount of games installed, which is pricey.

One thing a lot of people don't consider is that with a digital version, you're essentially giving PSN a monopoly on your games purchases and so you're forced to pay whatever price PSN is currently selling the game for. Whereas with a disc version, you have endless amounts of stores you can buy physical discs from, and so you can often find whatever game you want for sale on some store or another. In my experience physical discs are often cheaper than the digital version, so you can easily make back your $100. Don't give PSN a monopoly on your games purchases, buy a disc version.

But sometimes digital stores has good discounts and its too attempt ing not to buy them. I think the new PS plus structure of essential, Extra, and premium have made the digital a good option as well. I paid 100 for the extra and currently playing ghost of tsushiba, injustice, assassins creed, and uncharted at the same time.

I have the PS5 digital version cause my main console is the Series X. But even on XBox I never use any discs. Over 90% of my games are from game pass or gold. It's more like a Blueray player. It's nice to have but not essential to me.

For those that have a PS4 collection and like having physical copies of games it's definitely a no brainer.
As for others what I will say is that in case you wanna sell the games you bought physically there will always be a market for that as well, when the digital ones don't really hold any reselling value, finally I feel that if somebody decides to resell their PS5 the value of the disc one and want will be far greater.

Exactly. Even if what you sell isn’t at a crazy value. You always get something back. You can’t say the same with digital copies. It’s always the case tho , there’s always gunna be a collector in the future that will pay big money for a rare game/console. It may take a lot of patience but those things do happen

So far I’ve only purchased 2 disc games and have saved 85 dollars. This disc version will eventually pay for itself. I prefer digital games but some of the sales on hard copies are quite insane. Especially on the used market.

I would suggest getting the disc version so you have all options available but I would also suggest to buy more digital games because it's very likely that the next console won't have a disc drive anymore. Most games are bought digitally and with the digital console it's clear that many players can't play physical games anymore so the push to digital is inevitable and if you care about backward compatibility you might miss out with discs on the successor.

The games are very expensive on the playstation store and I've personally grabbed a lot of games for a lot less physically than what they cost online. Demons souls & ratchet and clank was $50 the previous black Friday on the psn store but managed to get both for $60 at brand new. Disc version the way to go price-wise

I got Digital at launch as I mainly play PC, so I haven't bought physical media in almost a decade. Also it looks better in my setup. One thing I took into account was digital games utalise the SSD better, by the time you switch discs you would already be playing if it was digital. This is more noticeable on the new xbox with multiple games open at once.

After what seemed to be an endless effort of obtaining a PS5 by signing up through PlayStation, I finally was able to purchase one today. I purchased the disc version as I have an enormous inventory of PS4 physical games, which I prefer. I enjoy just looking at the collection and the artwork on the sleeves, and keeping them alphabetized. I feel if I can’t hold it, I don’t really own it. That’s just me. The same reason I have somewhat of a gaming console museum in my home with consoles going all the way back to the 70’s right up to the present day. I also have a coin-op arcade in my home in a dedicated arcade room, complete with a pool table.
I’m still unclear what the problem Sony is having in keeping up with demand in regards to the PS5. I had almost given up, but that drive to complete my collection is what kept me trying, and now I’m excited to have one headed my way.

The nice thing about that is you've got an entire generation of games to go back and play! If you sign up for PlayStation Plus, you get 20 of the best PS4 games available to download as well, stuff like the Last Of Us Remastered, God of War, Resi 7 etc. Loads to catch up on!

Just bought the digital version today since I'm getting less and less on buying discs. There are three main reasons for it: In my country the new game is more expensive than the digital version, and when I have to move to apartment I don't have to bring all the discs since saving up more space is a must in a tiny room. The last one is, I'm getting less and less on buying games physically - it's so easy to browse on the PS store and buy the games using my credit card.

There's something to be said about the free games you get with both PS Plus and EA Play memberships - this essentially takes at least the initial 10-something games that you would have bought on disc out of the equation and for less hardcore gamers, 1 incremental game every month too. I'm in month two of owning the PS5 disc edition(with PS Plus and EA play) and I have only now borrowed Spiderman Miles Morales from a friend after running through 6 big titles. Curious to see what others think.

From my personal experience while owning PS4, I never bought / sold any disc based games, and always bought digital on sale or from PS Plus / EA Play, the only game that I had as disc was the one that came with the console bundled itself (Last of Us II), that's why I decided to go with the digital version this time. But having disc version still probably good idea if you're also like me (never use disc based game) but occasionally have the need to watch certain dvd media from certain gathering events, talk, etc (yes sometimes this is their only option) and you don't have a dvd player

I have the disc version just to have the options, but I prefer downloading games. I have pretty fast internet and it actually works faster than blu-ray without all the noise associated with it. Despite all that, I feel a little guilty because I know that it’s killing the used market and we’re going to be stuck with higher prices because of that.

I went to a game store once and I was able to pick up a bundle of 5 brand new PS4 games for the equivalent of $26. Also, I bought Ni No Kuni 2 on clearance new for $4. I understand if some don't want to buy physical versions of their games but deals like the ones I got would be impossible for owners of the PS5 Digital since your only source is PSN. That's why I recommend forking the extra $100 getting the disc version.

Unless I’m missing it, which is absolutely a possibility, owning a disc version gives the option of buying special editions of games. Like the Firefly edition of TLoUP1 which comes with a physical disc and special edition pile of extras. There’s a digital deluxe version that’s the same as the firefly edition just without the special steel case etc. Now if you could buy the Firefly digital edition which comes with the same collector pieces and the game be a digital download , the digital edition would be the better console imo

The only reason why I bought the disc one is because games are usually cheaper in my country than they are on the official PS store and it saves me quite a bit of money. For example, I've seen that Horizon Forbidden West is for about 60$ on the PS store yet I bought the game for only 40$ in my local store. So in terms of money, I'd go for the disc one.

Same here, plus digital games are like long term leasing games and aren’t actually owned. Physical games you own and keep forever unless lost or damaged, digital games are yours until the licensing agreement is revoked or the service is down.

I had no option but to buy the disk version, that's what was available in the market for a reasonable price, the price difference between the disk and the digital version was almost $30 which didn't make sense to go for the minimalist version and pay twice as much as it should actually costs.

I've always preferred disc versions, when I buy a game I actually like to know I physically own something I can touch feel look at, I also like the box art and any of the other art that may come with the box version.

I got the digital edition, as i don't really enjoy having a bunch of disc cases laying around.
I also found the more sleek look of the digital edition. Of course this is my opinion, so the disc version is probably just as good as the digital edition.

Disc versions will always be my preference for one main reason. I don’t have WiFi where I live. So trying to download anything over 15 gigs over my hotspot would take literal days. I like having the option of just buying the disc with the 1.0 version of the game. If the future of gaming truly is entirely digital then people who live in my same situation aren’t going to fare well.

Whenever I decide to fork over the cash for one(and becomes available at retail price)I’m going with the disc version. I like how you say you have a “long term rental” with the digital version of the system as I figure that whenever they update the PS Store that I may lose all of my media. I’m not exactly sure how it works, so you can call it paranoia. I know streaming is the future & disc will eventually at some point become obsolete, but I just like having a physical copy.

In addition, systems can crash & can be hacked & I’d hate to have purchased something, it get corrupted, & then I’m screwed & have to buy the game over again. Plus I have a decent size library of movies & games & I’m sure all of that would bulk up my system really quick. Id had to purchase an external storage device for some of the stuff since my PS4 is full & I don’t even have that much on there. Even after deleting old saved media from past versions of Madden & NBA 2K, my main hard drive is still around 90% full.

Maybe it’s that I haven’t mastered the art of digital games or something, but I haven’t figured out how to actually play something from the external hard drive. It gave me some message that I didn’t fully get. I can’t recall what it said as I haven’t messed with the drive in awhile. I’m Im computer illiterate so I’m more than certain I’m goofing up something really simple.

Long story short…until I have to go digital I’m sticking with disc.

My PS3 physical collection was way bigger than my PS4's because nowadays we get some really good deals in the PS Store. Sometimes, if not most of the times, even cheaper than I can find at retail. And let's not forget PS Plus. However, I like having the option because you can find better deals for newer games in retail, as well as cheaper pre-orders.

I personally went with the digital edition because I know that after a while the disc tray will fail and then it will be a matter of paying for it to be fixed. I feel that a console with less moving parts is a better investment.

Thanks for the great content mate. Bought myself a digital edition couple weeks ago since the only game ive been actively playing is fifa. Getting the digital version is the best deal imo as i rarely purchase disc knowing the fact that i easily get bloody bored with other games. I used to be vary wary of physical media back when my only console was an Xbox one cause I found the need to insert a disc to play a game extremely inconvenient since I was the kind of guy to switch games...but when I got the Ps4 I kinda got used to it and in turn liked it cause of the little things I could do with hard discs vs streaming like if I want to play an old version of a game with an exploit, I could just install the disc and stop the update but the digital already installs the patch included. My family and friends has a lot of ps4 owners with HUGE disc collections so we kinda borrow games from each other like books. So we all can try different games without spending a lot. Speaking of disc deals, in my country, the game shops sell discs WAY CHEAPER than the psn online stores like the highest cost vs online is half of the cost. And bottomline, it is kind of a rule of thumb for me that more is better and versatility is a good trait.

Recently there was an offer in Spain where the PS5 costed 450€ both the digital and standard edition, so there was no choice. I would choose standard anyway, as I have a PC and one of the best things of owning a console in my opinion is getting your games in a shop, the happiness when unboxing it, also you can sell your old games and, something that’s very important too: If you get the digital edition you only can get games from a single shop, the PS one (unless you get keys on random websites), so prices are higher. When getting a physical game, there are more offers available.

I went with the digital version, partially because it’s cheaper, but I realized I only have one game I play on my ps4 that requires a disc. I’m leaning toward the digital version. I’ve been buying all my games digitally on the ps4. I bought a used one back in 2019 and don’t own any discs. GameStop is having a pro day on the 24th of this month and you better believe I’m going to be posted up a few hours before the store opens. I’m doing research now. The argument on used game markets and special editions are sound. I just don’t like going shopping in stores and waiting in lines unless I’m forced to.

Personally, I’m waiting for a disc version for the same reason I buy physical copies of any media I really like. LICENSING AGREEMENTS. Sometimes you stream something and it may not be available when you want to watch/listen to it again, it’s the same with games. Conservation of media means a lot to me, and since you don’t own the game and it can be revoked from your library without your knowledge or consent it’s really not my preference.

When you have the funds, disconnect your PS4 and give it to your friend for a very small fee, sell your Blu-ray player too while you're at it and have a nice dinner with the missus. Then you buy the ps5 disc edition, a memory storage in case you got plenty ps4 games left or those big filed ps5 games later, and a remote and you'll have all of it in 1 machine. Space saved and you miss out on nothing. It's a good deal!

You'll save more money in the long run by going physical. The discs eventually depreciate in value over the years because they are tangible and you can get some killer deals. Digital media, on the other hand, isn't tangible and doesn't depreciate and you'll just have to rely on the good heart of Sony to give you discounts. That said, I DO think we are headed for an all digital realm for pretty much everything. It's a slow but sure shift. And maybe with the money that companies can save on producing the physical media, maybe they can pass on those savings to us and give us discounts on the digital media. Buuuuuut greed is unfortunately a thing.

Discs also open up the second hand resell market, which I know games developers hate (understandably, a game is technically 'sold' but they make no money from it). Digital removes the opportunity of that happening. We're definitely going all digital though. The PS6, or whatever that ends up being called, I think will either be all digital, or the last console with an optical drive.

Well I got my disc PS5 last October and I can honestly say I've already saved hundreds in games. Unless the game is on a huge sale in PS store 9 times outta 10 I get the disc because I found that not just PS5 but even PS4 games that came out years ago go for 60 plus dollars an and example is Mass Effect Legendary edition. I wanted to get it because I never played part 3 and in the store its 60 and I wasn't gonna pay that much for it I went to Walmart that same week and it was there for 19.99 so yeah you find out stores sometimes have the same game marked down. Thats 40 plus dallars I saved on just 1 game so imagine multiple games I've already did the same tactic for.

I'm curious. Have you thought about increasing the memory of your console? I bought the disc version and have games that I transferred over from my ps4 in my digital library, plus I bought it with Ragnorok. And I use ps4 and 5 disc games. I wonder how long before you start running out of memory. I installed a Seagate 2T SSD to make sure that I don't have any problems. They offer a 4T card, too. Be sure to get one with a heat sink if you go that route.

I’m not gonna buy a PS5, invest my time into a game on disc, and then have the possibility of losing out on being able to play it because the disc drive breaks. I bought the physical edition because physical games are generally much cheaper and you can sell them or lend/borrow them when you're finished with them. I've gotten plenty of free games from my friends who've finished with them, something I just wouldn't have the benefit of with a digital console. As someone who wants Gran Turismo 7 I also don't have to pay that £70 on the digital store since the physical copy has already dropped by over £10 and in 99% of cases games that go on sale digitally still cost more than the physical version. Physical media has its perks as much as people act like it doesn't.

I got the digital edition mainly because its cheaper, but also 99% of my games are downloaded anyway. The only games im missing are Uncharted 4 (which they gave for free anyway) and COD advanced warfare which doesn’t bother me. Get whatever better suits your library. If you have a lot of disc games that you play a lot get the disc version, otherwise get digital edition.

If you are considering the PS5 Digital to save £100, but play multiple games, id reconsider:

In a years time after game's release they are usually MUCH cheaper than the digital editions as the value of those games drop as they are no longer 'new titles'. However, the PS5 store will still have them as the full price most of the time, and any deals are unlikely to mach the natural discount that second-hand copies have. All this means that if you want to save money, get the £100 more disc one as youll get that 100 back by buying second hand or discounted games in shops instead of buying full-priced or bad deals on PS5 store

As well as the ps+ subscriptions offering a lot of discounts as well as options to download the same titles for free as long as you have a subscription. Thanks, helpful video for those of us out here living in crazy town, going back and forth about which version to get. I'm leaning towards digital, but I'm hesitant to commit for 2 reasons. 1) On my PS4, all the current games I play are digital. I haven't owned a physical disc game in a couple of years. But, I do still have a collection of Blu-Ray movies that I'm not quite ready to let go of. 2) I've read the Disc version is often easier to acquire, so that makes me want to just go for that version. Wal-Mart is doing a re-stock today, and I keep going back and forth on which one I'm going to try to snag! Although, I'm realistic so I know the chances are slim I'll get one.

Rightly said. Over here in India too, stocks available for disc versions are higher in number than that of digital. Initially I wanted to buy digital. But, in the next restock I would never mind getting the disc version. Keeping the options to buy cheaper physical games from Amazon in mind, extra bucks paid for disc version can be easily covered up in the long run.
In digital, we are overly dependent on psn prices, that's something to think about.

Assuming you don’t care about looks and prefer digital games, it all comes down to price. If there are a few discs you regularly play and the cost of those plus the cost of the digital edition add up to more than the disc version, then get the disc version. If it’s more cost effective to redownload those games on a digital version, then get the digital edition.

Yeah I have the Disk version, I didn’t even look at the digital version as a option! for me personally.I wanna hold on to real media for as long as possible. I love the box art the maps stickers etc that all depends on the devs but defo Disk version for me.

For me the disc edition is perfect for the soul reason I watch 4K movies & it saves me a ton of money buying a separate 4K player.

With the games I download them to my console & that makes it ten times more convenient for me as I don't buy physical games anymore.

All in all I'm extremely happy with my choice 😊

@Avmpz alt Yep :) A friend of mine bought the same version & was able to download the games he wanted once he bought them.

Much more easier for me personally as I buy games from the store these days

Same reason here. I have multiple old movies that my parents bought back in the day that I might like to play one day. And for games I am just downloading them because I don’t like to change disks 😂

I recently bought a disc version bearing in mind I am 99.9% sure I will never use the drive I just think it looks a little more pleasing to the eye and less looking like a de-humidifier.

I got the digital version because I knew for an absolute fact I will never ever, ever, ever buy another disc game again. When digital download became a thing in the PS3, that became a bulk of my game purchases. When I got the PS4, digital was the entirety of my purchases, so getting a disc PS5 made no sense for me.

Awesome vid!..i literally just bought a digital version about 30min ago, mainly because it was available and i know theyll sell out before Christmas..but i see i can add expandable storage so i think i made good choice, even though digital was the only available choice!

my take is if you had a lot of ps4 discs and you like using discs for movies, then you should get the disc version. if you've always been digital and all your games are digitally bought then id 100% go for that. thats just my personal preference though but its ultimately your choice.

I bought the disc version because I like the satisfaction of going to my collection and picking out a game to play and inserting in the console, I’ve always physically copies of games with very few digital like ones I can’t get in the store are digital like the other day i went to my local Best Buy to get god of war 3 remastered, madden 22 and South Park fractured but whole but they didn’t have any copies left so I got a PlayStation card and got them for cheap off the PlayStation store but other than that it’s always physical for me

With this slow ramp-up of being even able to find a PS5 and then having any meaningful exclusives, I went for the disc version. I figured that I might as well pay a little more and get more out of it by being able to read/play my PS4 discs until more PS5 games release. Now, I can actually afford to sell my PS4 console since my physical games can be played on the PS5.

PS - Ideally, I wasn't going to buy a PS5 and still wait it out until a "slim" version or so came out. But my PS4 was progressively crapping out with how slow and laggy it was, especially while playing Subnautica. Made me just throw in the towel and buy a PS5 - it was only because the Gamestop near me had it, that I pulled the trigger.

I got myself the disc version merely because I could easily resell games, and also buy those games for less money, because often times used games (discs) are cheaper than their digital version on the PS store. I don't mind having to swap between discs when I want to play different games.

I bought the disc version because my internet is absolute garbage and downloading and installing games from the playstation store would take forever. Installing them off of a disc is so much quicker. If I ever want a digital game I still have that option, but being able to use discs is a really big plus for me. And I would also love to use it as a dvd player so that it’s multi purpose and can save some space.

You may save £100 upfront with the digital version but lose out on hundreds maybe thousands of £££ in the long run due to the price of digital versions being so much more expensive. Not to mention if you already have some ps4 games on disc and want to play that game you still can on ps5 where as buying the digital you lose that unless you pay even more as well as losing all the money you spent on those disc versions.

There is no clear answer to this other than if you fancy owning physical media or enjoying having everything digital. Only bonus to disc is that you can play 4K ultra hd blu-ray, which is why I got the disc version. Before that I only had dvds so imagine my experience suddenly upgrading to full blown 4K.

I got the disk version and got miles Morales at 1900 INR which is HALF the price of the game on psn 3999. The game was a bit too short for my taste but really well done.

Well, for me, I got the disc version. Because I have 21 PS4 games on disc, and I also have a few blu-ray movies. So, I went for the disc version, plus, I pre-ordered the physical copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales back in 2020. Since then, I’ve waited for THREE whole years to get one, and I FINALLY got one six or seven days ago, and I’m happy with the version that I got.

Fair points made. I knew before I watched the vid I was happy with my selection and while you bring up some good points I am still confident I bought the right one for me.

Should your PSN ever get banned you lose all the games you spent your money on. No reason it should happen, but just the thought of that being a possibility is enough for me to prefer to actually own the copies. I am a bit of a collector, and I still have many of my PS1 favourite disks. I like the fact that sometime in the future, I can re sell the game if needed. Something that with a digital edition you can't really do. I can also take the game to a friends house if I want. Even if I don't have friends it's nice to think this is possible. There's just something about owning your own free copy that beats renting a digital piece of media that technically you do not own, but simply have the right to use.

The one downside I see is having to get up and insert a new disk to play a game rather than easily switching like I do on my steam account. But that's a minor inconvenience for me.

What I will say though is that if the digital version came with more SSD space, then it would have been worth considering.

Still waiting for a PS5 to come in stock and assumed I would go with disc. I am a big 4k movie collector. But just read that the PS 54K player does not support some of the most standard movie HDR programs (HDR +10, Dolby vision). Definitely going to look for digital now. Unless I am wrong on the 4K player…?

Disc version is best of both worlds. So I have disc version. The more options for deals on games the better especially with the inevitable price increase to $70 in games.

I’d prefer the disc version for game rentals. If you have the digital version it’s $70 or nothing for big release games. If you’re curious about a game it’s straight up impossible to try it out without a full-price purchase unless you’ve got that drive.

I would be more on-board with this if places like Blockbuster still existed, but sadly the option to 'rent' a game just isn't there anymore, at least not for us here (UK). I used to save a fortune by renting a game for a weekend or a week back in the PS2/PS3 days, and got to try out loads of titles that I'd otherwise have missed. I guess we can only hope for a massively improved PSNow that might offer some degree of this, with newer titles.

@Proper Honest Tech If PSN offered game rentals at a reasonable price (the way streaming services like Amazon offer movie rentals) I think I’d be totally fine with a digital console. Here in the US I can rent game discs from a vending machine at the grocery store, or most big games are available to borrow for free from my local library. There’s also GameFly if you rent games often enough to justify a monthly subscription, but I’m mostly good with the one-offs when a new game comes out.

Think about it like this, COD BOCW is still $69.99 on ps store, while the disc copy is only $16 on eBay. Regardless of if I buy games digitally, years down the line if I want a game that’s older, it will more than likely be available for cheaper on disc than digitally, which is why the disc version is worth it.

I have the digital edition but wanted the disc version because a lot of the games I had were discs, but i bought the digital edition because at the time it was the only one in stock and I had the chance so I took it. It took some saving up but i was able to purchase the games digitally on the playstation store.

But for people who will own the Playstation for the first time, then the digital version is better because the player may not find the game discs they want in some specific places, while the digital version contains all the games you want.But I don't know if they are the same price.
