Goodbye
Dikta Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hiding my face from the light
The window closed, no air inside
Still I try to put on a smile
But I'm not worried, I'm just okay
I washed off all my sins today
But I'm afraid
I'm afraid of letting go
Yes, I'm afraid
I'm afraid of letting you know
That I'm not ready
But soon I'll learn to say goodbye
As you sit down there by my bed
And ask me how I am today
I never thought I'd be one of those
Who cannot even say what I don't wanna do
And I'm not worried, I'm just okay
I washed off all my sins today
But I'm afraid
I'm afraid of letting go
Yes, I'm afraid
I'm afraid of letting you know
That I'm not ready
But soon I'll learn to say goodbye
I'm not ready
But soon I'll say goodbye
The song "Goodbye" by Icelandic band Dikta is a thought-provoking and emotional track that delves into the idea of facing mortality, letting go, and saying goodbye. The opening lyrics reveal a fear of death and the unknown, with the singer avoiding thoughts of the afterlife and "hiding" from the light. The closed window and absence of air add to the sense of confinement and restriction, but still, the singer attempts to "put on a smile" in the face of fear.
Despite the fear, the singer claims to have "washed off all [their] sins," suggesting that they have taken steps towards redemption or closure. However, as the song progresses, it becomes clear that the fear of letting go of life and loved ones is still present. The singer admits to being "afraid of letting go" and "afraid of letting [them] know" their true feelings.
The final lines of the song, "I'm not ready but soon I'll say goodbye," seem to suggest that the singer is coming to terms with their mortality and is willing to confront their fear of saying goodbye. It is a poignant and heartbreaking message that speaks to the universal human experience of facing our mortality.
