Don't Let Me Down
Dillard & Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.

Nobody ever loved me like she does,
Oh, she does, yeah, she does.
And if somebody loved me like she do me,
Oh, she do me, yes, she does.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.

I'm in love for the first time.
Don't you know it's gonna last.
It's a love that lasts forever,
It's a love that had no past.

Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.

And from the first time that she really done me,
Oh, she done me, she done me good.
I guess nobody ever really done me,
Oh, she done me, she done me good.

Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dillard & Clark's "Don't Let Me Down" express the singer's fear of losing the love of their life. The repeated plea of "Don't let me down" underscores this fear of being abandoned, and the song emphasizes just how much this person means to the singer. The lines "Nobody ever loved me like she does" and "If somebody loved me like she do me" emphasize the depth and uniqueness of their relationship. And with the line "I'm in love for the first time," the song suggests that this love is particularly special and meaningful, perhaps because it is a new experience for the singer.

The lyrics also hint at a sense of vulnerability in the relationship. The line "It's a love that had no past" suggests that the singer may be new to this kind of connection and that they're afraid of losing it because it's something they've never had before. Similarly, the lines "And from the first time that she really done me" and "I guess nobody ever really done me" suggest that the singer may have been hurt before and is now feeling grateful for the love and care they've found. Ultimately, the song expresses a heartfelt plea for the continuation of a relationship that is deeply important to the singer.

John Lennon along with Paul McCartney are widely recognized as being the 2 greatest songwriters ever. I would also put Bob Dylan in that company. Lennon's version of Don't Let Me Down is a plea Coming from his heart and soul to Yoko. They had only been together for about six months by then and Lennon being the great vocalist he was really sang the song he written himself and being in the Beatles, only ended up as a b-side to McCartney's Get Back, such was the amazing songwriting in the Beatles, this track would be worthy of an A-side to any other artists. I do like this version. I'm a fan of Gene Clark. Being a fan of the Byrds I loved Clark's tracks on both the Tambourine Man and Turn, Turn, Turn albums, plus Eight Miles High was primarily a Gene Clark song with a couplet from Crosby and the John Coltrane/ Ravi Shankar style guitar from Jim Mcguinn. I have Gene Clark's albums Echoes, Gene Clark Sings For You, White Light and No Other. He's such an underrated artist. No one comes close to the Beatles.

Lennon's version of his own song is without a doubt the greatest ever version. Lennon's singing from his heart and soul, pleading to Yoko, who he had only been with for around six months. It was probably the first song he wrote about her. I like this version. I'm a fan of Gene Clark. His work in the Byrds, I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better, Here Without You, I Knew I'd Want You, Set You Free This Time, The World Turns All Around Her, his album Echoes, Gene Clark Sings For You, White Light and No Other. I'm a fan of the Byrds and that's how I got into Gene Clark. A very underrated artist. But as for Don't Let Me Down you cannot compare anything to the Beatles. The utmost, greatest band of all time. If it wasn't for the Beatles, and especially A Hard Days Night, there would be no Byrds and then most likely Gene Clark wouldn't have been given the chance to make the music he did. The Beatles had such an influence on so many artists.
