My Funny Valentine
Dinah Shore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Behold the way our fine feathered friend
His virtue doth parade
Thou knowest not, my dim-witted friend
The picture thou hast made
Thy vacant brow, and thy tousled hair
Conceal thy good intent
Thou noble upright truthful sincere
And slightly dopey gent, you are

My funny valentine, sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable, un-photographable
Yet, you're my favorite work of art

Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But, don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine's Day

Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But, don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me

Stay little valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine's Day

Overall Meaning

In "My Funny Valentine," Dinah Shore describes the qualities she loves about her partner, despite his perceived flaws. The song's opening lyrics discuss a bird that proudly shows off his good traits, which the singer seems to suggest is admirable. She then says that her partner's appearance may not be conventionally attractive, with "vacant brow" and "tousled hair," but that he is nonetheless a "noble upright truthful sincere" person. In the chorus, she calls him her "funny valentine" and notes that he makes her happy simply by existing.

The second verse begins with a set of rhetorical questions about the partner's looks and intelligence, but the singer quickly dismisses them, advising her partner not to change anything about himself for her. She reassures him that he is perfect just the way he is, repeating the line "stay little valentine" twice and declaring that each day they spend together is like Valentine's Day.
