I'll Walk Alone
Dinah Shore (Holiday) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll walk alone because, to tell you the truth, I'll be lonely
I don't mind being lonely
When my heart tells me you are lonely, too
I'll walk alone, they'll ask me why and I'll tell them I'd rather
There are dreams I must gather
Dreams we fashioned the night you held me tight
I'll always be near you wherever you are each night
In every prayer
If you call I'll hear you, no matter how far
Just close your eyes and I'll be there
Please walk alone and send your love and your kisses to guide me
Till you're walking beside me, I'll walk alone
I'll always be near you wherever you are each night
In every prayer
If you call I'll hear you, no matter how far
Just close your eyes and I'll be there
Please walk alone and send your love and your kisses to guide me

Till you're walking beside me, I'll walk alone
I'll walk alone

Overall Meaning

In "I'll Walk Alone," Dinah Shore sings about being alone but not minding it when she knows the person she loves is also feeling lonely. The lyrics are poignant and relatable, as it speaks to the idea that sometimes people just need to be alone with their thoughts and emotions. She says that she would prefer to walk alone because there are dreams she must gather, possibly indicating that she needs to take some time for herself to focus on her own goals and aspirations. The line "dreams we fashioned the night you held me tight" is a beautiful sentiment, as it speaks to the intimacy that two people can share when they feel safe and connected with one another.

Despite being apart, Dinah reassures her loved one that she'll always be near, even if it's just through prayer. She tells them to "send your love and your kisses to guide me," emphasizing the power of love even when physically separated. The final line repeats the title, "I'll walk alone," but it takes on a different meaning with the addition of "till you're walking beside me." It's a hopeful line that indicates she won't be alone forever, and that her loved one will eventually join her on her journey.

Overall, "I'll Walk Alone" is a beautiful and romantic song that captures the complexities of love, loneliness, and the power of connection.

They call, no date
I promised you I'd wait
I want them all to know
I'm strictly single old

[Chorus]
I'll walk alone
Because, to tell you the truth, I'll be lonely
I don't mind being lonely
When my heart tells me you are lonely, too
I'll walk alone
They'll ask me why and I'll tell them I'd rather
There are dreams I must gather
Dreams we fashioned the night you held me tight

[Verse 2]
I'll always be near you wherever you are
Each night in every prayer
Just whisper, I'll hear you no matter where you are
So close your eyes and I'll be there

[Chorus 2]
Please walk alone
But send your love and your kisses to guide me
Till you're walking beside me
I'll walk alone

[Outro]
Darling
All by myself
I'll walk alone
(Alone)

Probably the same age as your grandma and I remember it being played over the radio (then). It's about a girl speaking to her man who's overseas fighting. Beautiful, and a beautiful voice.
