Willow Weep for Me
Dinah Washington & Hal Mooney And His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Willow weep for me,
Willow weep for me
Bend your branches down
Along the ground and cover me
Listen to my plea
Hear me willow and
Weep for me
Gone my lovely dreams
Lovely summer dreams
Gone and left me here
To weep my tears along the stream
Sad as I can be
Hear me willow and
Weep for me

Whisper to the wind
And say that love has sinned
To leave my heart a sign
And crying alone
Murmur to the night
And hide her starry light
So none will find me sighing
Crying all alone

Weeping willow tree
Weep in sympathy
Bend your branches down
Along the ground and cover me
Listen to me plea
Hear me willow and
Weep for me

Whisper to the wind
And say that love has sinned
To leave my heart a sign
And crying alone
Murmur to the night
And hide her starry light
So none will find me sighing
Crying all alone

Weeping willow tree
Weep in sympathy
Bend your branches down
Along the ground and cover me
Listen to my plea
Hear me willow and
Weep for me

Willow
Willow
Weep for me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Willow Weep for Me" convey a deep sense of melancholy and heartbreak. The repetition of the lines "Willow weep for me" creates a somber and pleading tone, as the singer asks the willow tree to empathize with their pain and sorrow. The willow tree is often associated with grief and mourning, symbolizing the singer's need for solace and understanding in their emotional turmoil.

In the first verse, the singer implores the willow tree to bend its branches down to cover them, emphasizing their desire to be enveloped in sadness and isolation. The plea to the willow tree suggests a longing for someone or something to listen and provide comfort in their suffering. By addressing the willow directly, the singer seeks a connection with nature, hoping that the tree's weeping resonates with their own tears and despair.

The second verse reflects on lost dreams, specifically alluding to "lovely summer dreams" that have faded away. This highlights a sense of nostalgia and longing for happier times that have now been replaced by sadness. The image of weeping tears along the stream signifies the singer's isolation and the feeling of being left behind.

The third verse further explores the feeling of abandonment and betrayal. The singer asks the willow to whisper to the wind, signifying the desire for their pain to be acknowledged and heard by the world. The mention of a love that has sinned suggests a past relationship that brought disappointment and heartbreak. The singer laments being left alone to cry and sigh, wishing for the night to hide their pain and tears from prying eyes.

In the final verse, the singer again calls out to the weeping willow, asking it to weep in sympathy. The plea for the branches to cover them reinforces the desire for solace and protection from the harshness of the world. The repetition of the lines "Hear me willow and weep for me" underscores the singer's yearning for someone or something to truly understand and share in their sadness.

Overall, the lyrics of "Willow Weep for Me" express a deep emotional longing, sadness, and a desire for catharsis. It beautifully captures the universal experience of heartbreak and the need for empathy and understanding in times of pain.

Lil Supa y Nujabes, mis artistas preferidos de hip hop han usado las canciones de Dinah Washington como sample de sus temas. Es increíble la influencia musical que ha generado esta mujer en artistas contemporáneos. Soul will never die!.

I think music is timeless. I feel like when I listen to this song, I'm not alone. Nujabes used to listen to it too. It's like we're listening together, even though we're from different times. It makes the music feel more special, like it connects us beyond time.
