Zai Jian Wo Ai Ni
Ding Wei Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ding Wei's song "Zai Jian Wo Ai Ni" (Goodbye, I Love You) are a commentary on the concept of love and relationships. The first stanza references Cupid, the Roman God of love who is often blamed for causing mischievous and unpredictable love affairs. Despite the unpredictability of love, the chorus emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself and not letting others dictate one's emotions, saying "my heart is my own, my love is my own, don't give it up for anyone." The lyrics promote the idea that love should be liberating and empowering rather than restricting or confining, with the refrain of "goodbye, I love you" ultimately suggesting that it is better to prioritize self-love than to remain in a relationship that is no longer fulfilling.

The song's second verse touches on the themes of time and the transience of love, suggesting that even the strongest love has a shelf life and that love and hate are separated by a fine line. However, the emphasis is still on individual autonomy in love, with the lyrics urging listeners not to fear crossing the line that separates love and hate but instead to be wary of losing the feeling of love altogether.

Overall, "Zai Jian Wo Ai Ni" is a song that encourages listeners to prioritize self-love and individual freedom in love, while acknowledging the unpredictable nature of romantic relationships.

I'm a millennial who was only less than six months old when Teresa Teng passed away.

I only discovered Teresa Teng when there was a Google Doodle in the search bar to commemorate her 65th birthday. I read her biography on how she rose in her legendary and GOAT status today not just in Chinese-speaking nations but also in the entire Asia particularly in the Philippines, my home country.

Four years later, Teresa Teng resurfaced in my Google algorithm through news about her hologram concert as early as midyear of 2022. It was also resurfaced when I started listening to Mandarin Pop Songs such as Xie Hua Piao Piao, Luguwo, Super Idol, and Shanghai Beach that are used in social media as memes. I kept listening because it was fun.

Along with the Chinese meme songs in the random Mandopop playlist, there was TERESA TENG that appeared in my playlist. Without any hesitation it's a love at first listen, and maybe at first sight, especially when The Moon Represents My Heart was played. Even though I might not be able to witness and listen to her songs in her lifetime, she sealed her mark to listen to her songs, no matter how young she left in this world. It's an honor to bear my responsibility to share your music to non-Chinese Gen Z kids to appreciate classical pop and ballad music.

Wo ai ni TERESA TENG, from the Philippines.
❤️🥰🇵🇭
