Sleepless Nights
Dinner Party Terrace Martin Robert Glasper 9th Wonder & Kamasi Washington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ooh, ooh
Ooh

Cloudy days
Sleepless nights
I lay awake tossin', wonderin' when we'll get it right
We've been down
For so long
Know change been on the way, ain't worried no more

Know we comin' (comin', comin', comin')
Know we comin' (comin', comin', comin')
Yeah, just keep goin' (goin, goin', goin')
Know we comin' (comin', comin', comin')

Cloudy days
Sleepless nights
I lay awake tossin', wonderin' when we'll get it right
We've been down
For so long
Know change been on the way, ain't worried no more

Know we comin' (comin', comin', comin')
Know we comin' (comin', comin', comin')

Yeah, just keep goin' (goin, goin', goin')
Know we comin' (comin', comin', comin')

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song Sleepless Nights by Dinner Party project a sense of weariness and exhaustion. The singer seems to be going through a period of questioning and self-doubt which is reflected in the repetitive use of "Cloudy Days" and "Sleepless Nights". The singer is contemplating the idea of change that is on the horizon and is hopeful that this change will be positive. While the singer has been down for a long time, there is a sense of determination and strength in their voice as they declare "know we coming".

The repetition in the lyrics is a reflection of the cyclical nature of life, where things often repeat themselves, but the hope that the singer clings to suggests that even within these repetitive cycles, there is room for optimism. The repeated line "Know we comin'" is a refrain that reasserts the singer's hope and determination. The song's message is clear - despite the weariness that comes with life, there is always hope for change, and with a sense of determination, anything is possible.

@AHiFi

There is so much that could be said to your very short comment... but I'd like to say this if you have a few minutes to spare and you're open to hearing it. I hope it's of value to you and others who feel in a similar place too.

There's a reason you are asking these questions right now; there is a reason these questions are being asked of you.

Pay attention to what is going on around you. Observe/listen more and speak less; for when you do speak, your words will have more value and understanding. Be there for someone when they ask for your help. Do something this week that you've been meaning to do for quite a long time - no matter how big or small it might be. Find what makes you happy because it is through inner peace that we find the strength to help others. Do something for someone else you love too. If there's no-one in your life that you love, then learn to love yourself more and don't be afraid to try and make a new friend. There are so many people in that position who feel alone - but they are far, far from alone. Don't reject a path because it seems scary. Surprise yourself. Do not be afraid in the face of adversity; do not be afraid to defend others from harm or persecution. Get 'out' there and be part of a movement. Be part of change.

Don't get too enraptured in petty, circular debates - this will only lead to inner pain. Agree to disagree more than you want to agree to disagree. Build from the common ground with others so that when you finally reach a disagreement, neither of you feels like the foundations are going to fall out from under you. You can both build different structures on top of these foundations but you'll always be able to come back down to that shared common ground. One day you may be able to build a bridge between these two structures. Opinions are not fixed; afford people that space to change and they may surprise you. Forgive more than you feel you should. Hold a mirror up to the inner you and work on what you see until you like what you see more than when you started working on what you saw.

I'm not saying you're not going to face hardship or personal tragedies; I'm not saying there won't be national or global disasters or that we won't face serious challenges to our existence; but from any ashes that come, we must strive to build something better for ourselves and for everyone. We must ask difficult questions of the status quo. Jesus/Iesus/Yeshua is an example of a figure who held up a mirror to others, and a mirror is what we should hold up to ourselves, those around us, and our societies. We must not lose what got us here; but we cannot also hold onto something that hurts us. All of this is a difficult balance but it is achievable within ourselves and is, therefore, achievable outside of ourselves.

As to what you ponder of your own personal purpose... that I cannot answer. I am sure you will find that in time. If you are open and observant, you will take that path. You may not even notice you're on it. But, like I said, if you are asking these questions, then you're already on the way to figuring it out. Just don't get too caught up in pondering - it can quickly become an adversary to taking the necessary action.

It can be easy to become jealous or angry if it seems that others have it together. That is their journey; you are on your journey. No-one else is on your journey. What I will say is that we really do live in a giant love story and it is very likely that your purpose involves enriching the lives of those around you - for we all share that mission. Be that love; be that light. It's not about the quantity of the views or the likes; it's about the quality of the message. What you do and say in your darkest hours is often worth more than what you do and say when life is a breeze.

This video may not have millions of views, but the message of the song and video are undeniably strong and encapsulates all of the above. And that's what matters. That's why you found your way here. That's why you posted your comment here. That's why I'm here. That's why I'm responding to your comment. The cause and effect of attraction to manifest a shared moment.

"If you build it, he will come."

I hope you have found some light in this message. If so, heal yourself with that light for as long as needed and then pass it on when you get the chance to do so. You're good enough if you believe in yourself like you are believed in. It's why you were put here. Always be thankful, even through painful times, and have a beautiful life through those highs and lows. You are loved.

And remember: the night is darkest right before the dawn.

Passing phone numbers car to car. Don't stop to close at a light. End of night hit quick & Split . Grab a burger. Sit with the fellas talking about the fine females we got at. Excellent cut. Brings me back. LA in the 90's in my 20's!✊🏾
