Little Fury Things
Dinosaur Jr. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What is it?
Who is it?
Where is it?

[Chorus:]
A rabbit falls away from me, I guess I'll crawl
A rabbit always smashes me, again I'll crawl
Tried to think what's over me, it makes me crawl
Then she runs away from me, faster than I crawl

I stopped to call, tried to feel it all
Stuck my hand and pulled real hard
Got stretch in miles, not in yards
Then I read, about all those who believe all of your lies
Sunlight brings the rage right in your eyes

[Chorus: x2]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dinosaur Jr.'s song "Little Fury Things" are cryptic and open to interpretation. The lines "What is it? Who is it? Where is it?" suggest a state of uncertainty and confusion. The chorus talks about a rabbit that falls away from the singer, causing them to crawl. The rabbit continues to smash the singer, making them crawl again. The singer tries to think about what's over them, which makes them crawl even more. Then a woman runs away from the singer faster than they can crawl.

The verses are even more abstract, with lines like "I stopped to call, tried to feel it all" and "sunlight brings the rage right in your eyes." The lyrics seem to be about feeling lost and unable to escape from something that keeps dragging the singer down. The rabbit and the woman could be symbolic of this, representing different aspects of the singer's struggle. The final line "sunlight brings the rage right in your eyes" adds a sense of urgency to the song, suggesting that the singer needs to break free from whatever is holding them back before it's too late.

This amazing budget video and, of course, this phenomenal song pretty much perfectly relate the entire timeline and mind/body/headspace that you are projected through from the peak of a brutal migraine headache episode hitting you full-on to taking the combination of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), butalbital, caffeine, and codeine. This highly restricted, highly addictive and highly regulated medication is commonly known as FIORINAL (C 1/4 in my own decades long experience with this medication).

I was prescribed FIORINAL at age 15 in 1980 for crippling migraine headaches that featured a LOT of pain, puke and pill popping. I was in my first punk band and was just about 14 months from heading out on a west coast tour from Vancouver to Texas and back. Pretty much tagging along with a couple of already established bands that had already been out on earlier treks that would help establish the ability and pathway for subsequent bands to head out and follow their paths which was such an incredible and vital process in the evolution of the DYI/PUNK/ALT/UNDERGROUND in North America.

Back to the FIORINAL. It was extremely effective. It was seriously addictive, it didn't offer any kind of "normal" or, "familiar" drug experience...at least as far as myself and my friends from the various music, skateboarding and, political scenes that I ran with. There was no high. There was also no down. The experience my friends and I had was like we were like Teflon and, a little bit warm and fuzzy like a good wine buzz but in total control and, the edge had just melted off along with the brutal headache and, you could actually hydrate without puking and, progressing to hours of dry heaving. We called the FIORINAL our "Rock Star Pills" because you were SOOOO "no problem" with EVERYTHING you encountered after the edges wore off. Bass head blown tube? No problem...Promoter is AWOL? No problem...and, everything would ALWAYS work out by showtime and/load out.

I put all my prescription (they had stickers like on the bottles accompanying the medication) and my deck was completely covered in my scrips stickers. Probably not the wisest thing to be sporting in a foreign country but, hey....Teflon, right?!

And, back then, as a minor, all we needed to cross and international border was a note from a parent authorizing you to do so. Same thing with the triplicate form restricted narcotics...note from my GP....one hundred FIORINAL...no problem! Remember that this was during the period from 1980 until I finally found a non-narcotic migraine medication (Zomig) that was a gamechanger (and, likely a lifesaver) and I began a horrendously brutal and most evil period of weaning off the stuff.

As dangerously incompetent as my ex-GP was, those were some pretty epic times. The live shows were so freakin smokin...who needed blow...we (thought?) we had the far superior aid in our blue and white capsules of awesomeness....our LITTLE FURY THINGS.

FURY/FIORINAL....hmmm, I immediately thought of my scrip covered deck the first time that I ever saw this video. I was still being prescribed FIORINAL at that point and, I didn't catch the name of the song until I grabbed YLAOM directly from the main SST HQ along with Sonic Youth's "Sister" Opal's "Happy Nightmare Baby" (another a absolutely phenomenal low budget video that captures narcotic use and musical feel incredibly) and, I think "Even If And Especially When" by the Screaming Trees. A killer haul eh?! But, would they survive on the road inside a smelly, blazingly hot, crowded and chaotic trek during the remaining 11 days if our 17 day trek?

In order to stop fixating on melting wax itvwas more than obvious what the cure all was - I popped a FIORINAL and put on my brand new Lovedolls Superstar tee and, let it perform the magic of those LITTLE FURY THINGS!

PS - Even though I was pretty certain that this video was about the blue and white capsules...I have NEVER asked Mascis or Barlow to authenticate for me. I've had numerous opportunities to ask them buuuuut, I kinda like my take on the whole thing.

Cheers

I was 13 and getting ready for my first date ever. i had stolen this album from my dad and i was blasting it. i remember putting on purple eyeshadow w my fingers, looking out the window, and feeling just SO grown up and SO in love. I remembered actually thinking to myself that when I was old, I'd remember this moment. ever since, I hear dinosaur jr and miss everything about my 13 yr old innocence. I'm in love, all over again, and it hurts the way love should.

Emergency Exit

how did that date go though
