The Last In Line
Dio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're a ship without a storm
Cold without the warm
Light inside the darkness lit at peace

We're a laugh without a tear
Hope without the fear
We are coming home
We're off to the witch
We may never never never come home
But the magic that we'll feel is worth a lifetime

We're all born upon the cross
We're the throw before the toss
You can release yourself but the only way is down

We don't come alone
We are fire we are stone
We're the hand that writes and quickly moves away

We'll know for the first time
If we're evil or divine
We're the last in line, yeah
We're the last in line

Two eyes from the east
It's the angel of the beast
And the answer lies between all good and bad

We search for the truth
We could die upon the tooth
But the thrill of just the chase is worth the pain

We'll know for the first time
If we're evil or divine
We're the last in line yeah
We're the last in line oh

Yeah

We're off to the witch
We may never never never come home
But the magic that we'll feel is worth a lifetime

We're all born upon the cross
You know, we're the throw before the toss
You can release yourself but the only way is down

We'll know for the first time
If we're evil or divine
We're the last in line oh
We're the last in line

See how we shine

We're the last in
We're the last in line
We're a ship without a storm
We're cold inside the warm
We're the last without a tear
We're the throw without the meal
We're the last in line

See how we shine
We're the last in line

Overall Meaning

In Dio's song "The Last In Line," the lyrics describe feelings of being lost and cold without warmth, but also finding light in the darkness and hope without fear. The chorus repeats the line "We're off to the witch, we may never never never come home, but the magic that we'll feel is worth a lifetime," suggesting the pursuit of something worth risking everything for. The following verse includes lines about being "thrown upon the cross," which can be interpreted as facing trials and hardships, but also the possibility of finding out if one is "evil or divine." The song concludes with the repetition of the chorus line "We're the last in line," emphasizing the sense of being an outsider or underdog.

Overall, the lyrics to "The Last In Line" convey a sense of adventure and also struggle, as the singer seeks to uncover something meaningful through the risks and trials they encounter. The chorus offers a somewhat ambiguous message about the pursuit of magic and the unknown, but the verses suggest that facing fears and hardships can lead to growth and understanding. The song's title, "The Last In Line," also suggests a kind of rebellion or defiance against societal norms or expectations.

@picklerick4296

Respect to Dio, but this is edited. the song is cut at exactly 02:00 skipping straight to the solo.
missing this verse:

"Two eyes from the east
it's the angel or the beast,
but the answer lies between the good an bad.

We search for the truth
we can die upon the tooth,
But the thrill of just the chase is worth the pain."

my favorite bit of the song.

RIP holy diver.

I was 17 when this came out. I'm so glad my teenage years were spent listening to bands like Dio. Still listen to all of them today at 55.

@frogstomp11

I'm right there with you. I'll be a metal head till I die. My current favorite band is Fit For An Autopsy. I'll be 56 in a few months with no sign of slowing down. The only time I feel my age is when I see my two grandkids. Hoping I can get them to listen also!

@DeplorableSon1776

I flash back to when I was 13 working with a pick axe digging a 6 ft deep hole through clay for an oil tank listening to Holy Diver endlessly on cassette. I have it burned in my brain as it kept going w auto flip function and all I did was just pressed play once. I miss that portable radio and Ronnie
