Dream On
Dio Malmsteen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every time that I look into the mirror
All these lines in my face getting clearer
The past is gone
It went by like dusk to dawn
Isn't that the way
Everybody's got their dues in life to pay
Well, I know, nobody knows
Where it comes and where it goes
I know it's everybody's sin
You got lose to know how to win

Half my life's in books' written pages
Lived and learned from fools and from sages
You know it's true, oh
All these things come back to you

Sing with me, sing for the years
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears
Sing with me, just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take it away
Hey-hey-hey

Sing with me, sing for the years
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears
Sing with me, just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take it away

Dream on, dream on, dream on
Dream yourself a dream come true
Dream on, dream on, dream on
Dream until your dream comes true

Dream on, dream on, dream on, dream on
Dream on, dream on, dream on, dream on, oh

Sing with me, sing for the years
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears
Sing with me, just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take it away

Sing with me, sing for the years
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears

Sing with me, just for today
Maybe tomorrow will pull out and take it away, yeah

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Dio Malmsteen's song Dream On speaks of the inevitability of aging, where every time the singer looks in the mirror, he sees more lines in his face. He acknowledges that everyone pays their dues in life, but notes that nobody knows where life comes from, and where it goes. However, he believes that losing is a necessary part of life to learn how to win. The second verse describes how the singer has lived and learned from both fools and sages in the pages of books. However, he notes that no matter how much we learn, everything we experience in life comes back to us in the end. The chorus urges the listener to sing for the years and for the tears, and to dream on until their dreams come true. It reminds the listener to cherish each day because tomorrow is unpredictable.

The 70s rock classic of dream on by the 70s and 80s cult classic hard rock band Aerosmith but with the beautiful and intricate neoclassical guitar virtuosity of Yngwie J Malmsteen and the majestic and godly voice of Ronnie James Dio, absolute masterpiece
