Abraham Martin And John
Dion Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lotta people, but it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone.
Has anybody here seen my old friend John,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lotta people, but it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone.
Has anybody here seen my old friend Martin,
Can you tell me where he's gone?

He freed a lotta people, but it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone.
Didn't you love the things they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?
And we'll be free,
Someday soon it's gonna be one day.
Has anybody here seen my old friend Bobby,
Can you tell me where he's gone?

I thought I saw him walkin' up over the hill
With Abraham, Martin and John.

Overall Meaning

The song "Abraham Martin And John" by Dion is a tribute to four influential leaders who fought for civil rights in America but whose lives were tragically cut short. The first verse starts with the mention of Abraham Lincoln, who was the 16th President of the United States and known for his role in ending slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation. The second verse talks about John F Kennedy, the 35th President, who was also assassinated while serving as President. Martin Luther King Jr, a prominent civil rights leader and activist, is mentioned in the third verse. He is known for his role in the American Civil Rights Movement and his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. The fourth verse mentions Bobby Kennedy, who was also assassinated and was a younger brother of John F Kennedy.

The song celebrates the legacies of these leaders and the positive impact they had on society. However, it also reflects on the tragedy of their premature deaths and the loss that the nation felt. The line "The good die young" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the idea that these leaders were taken too soon.

Overall, "Abraham Martin And John" serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of social justice and equality and the sacrifices made by those who fought for them. It is a tribute to great leaders who were taken too soon, but whose legacies continue to inspire generations to keep fighting for what is right.

As a poor Black Native American growing up in the 60's-70's-80's, all I can say is it really touched not just my heart but all of our heart's when Bobby Kennedy toured the poor South and saw for himself(As well as on National T.V.)what the black community was really like. Even to this day it still brings tears to my eyes seeing the expression on Bobbys face, it was one of bewilderment, shame, and genuine concern for a community he himself had never known growing up a Kennedy!!!

@MarkEastman

All of them were great. JFK was gonna stop our involvement in Vietnam. There was too much money to be made if he did it. Oswald and that crappy 12 dollar junk could not accurately do three shots that quick. People witnessed another shooter.
Bobby was hitting too deep in the mob. Sirhan Sirhan was a MJ 12 program. To this day he doesnโ€™t remember anything. He was 77 in 2021. He was recommended for parole but the governor refused it

We're you better off back then?

Robert Kennedy would have made a great president if his life wasn't cut short

@Native5

@LarryUSA Gmail I don't know about that. Not for us but if you were white you felt that way.
