You're The One
Dion Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Forever pushin' ten to midnight
Fade into the black
Tonight I'm blowing through the red lights
Always thinkin' back

It really doesn't matter
It's all in my mind
I think about it all of the time

You're the one living in the moment
I thought everything was sure
You're the one telling me it's hopeless
Don't know what I'm sorry for

The losers and the runaround guys
Hang out in the street
I'd wait until you said your goodbyes
Just so we could meet

It really doesn't matter
It's all in my mind
I think about it all of the time

You're the one living in the moment
I thought everything was sure
You're the one telling me it's hopeless
Don't know what I'm sorry for

You're the one

I'm caught between "I want" and "what's right"

You're the one living in the moment
I thought everything was sure
You're the one telling me it's hopeless
Don't know what I'm sorry for

You're the one

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dion's song "You're the One" tell a story of deep introspection and reflection. The singer seems to be struggling with his past and present choices while looking for a guiding light to lead him out of uncertainty. He talks about driving through the blackness of night, pushing himself to the limit, blowing through red lights, always thinking back. He's caught between wanting what he desires and doing what is right, and he doesn't know what he's sorry for. But he finds solace in the fact that "you're the one living in the moment," indicating that he has found someone who understands the importance of seizing the day.

The singer seems to recognize that some of his choices have led him down the wrong path, but he seems to have found someone who offers him comfort and understanding. That person seems to be living in the present, which could be seen as a refreshing change from the singer's preoccupation with the past. Although the singer is stuck in his own thoughts, he finds refuge in the person who keeps him grounded in the present. The song's lyrics touch on the idea that despite our struggles and uncertainties, there is always someone who can help us see things more clearly and push us in the right direction.

My wife and I first met when we 16 years of age and spent the next 36 years together...The first 10 or 15 years a lot of people expected us to "crash and burn" because we met at such a young age, but we proved everybody wrong and always had a blast together and this song became our little theme song later on in life. Unfortunately, my wife passed away in 2013 at the age of 52 from cancer. But every time I hear this song it makes me smile because it brings back the memories of all the good times I shared with my beautiful best friend.
