After an unsuccessful first single, the group were signed to Laurie Records. Their breakthrough came when "I Wonder Why" made # 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the group appeared for the first time on the Dick Clark TV show. They followed it with the ballads "No One Knows" (#19) and "Don't Pity Me" (#40).
This success won Dion and the Belmonts their first major tour in late 1958, with The Coasters, Buddy Holly and Bobby Darin, and this was followed up by the "Winter Dance Party" tour with Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. On 2 February 1959, after playing at Clear Lake, Iowa, Dion decided that he could not afford the $36 cost of a flight to the next venue. The plane crashed, and Holly and the other stars were killed. However, the tour continued, with Jimmy Clanton and Bobby Vee being added to the bill.
In March 1959, Dion and the Belmonts’ next single, "A Teenager in Love", was released, making #5 in the Billboard Hot 100 and #28 in the UK Singles Chart, and this was followed by an album, Presenting Dion and the Belmonts. Their biggest hit, "Where or When", was released in November 1959, and reached #3 on the U.S. chart.
However, in early 1960, Dion checked in to hospital for heroin addiction, a problem he had had since his mid-teens. Further single releases for the group that year were less successful, there were musical and financial disputes between Dion and members of the Belmonts, and in October 1960 Dion decided to quit for a solo career. The Belmonts also continued to release records, but with less success.
Dion and the Belmonts reunited in 1966 for the unsuccessful album Together Again on ABC Records, and again in 1972 for a one-off show at Madison Square Garden, recorded and released as a live album.

Diane, without your love, I'd die
Diane, you know you drive me wild, Diane
You're such a little evil child, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, I wanna pack and leave and slap your face
Bad girls like you are a disgrace
Way down deep inside, I cry
I should drag you down 'cause you're no good
You're two-faced, your heart's made of wood
But way down deep inside, I cry
Without you, little Diane, I'd die
Listen to my heart
Oh, you're tearin' it apart
Oh, why don't you understand?
Why don't you stop it?
Stop it
Stop it if you can
I want to spread the news that you're untrue
But Diane, what good would it do?
'Cause way down deep inside, I cry
Without you, little Diane, I'd die, I'd die
Yeah, don't you understand, Diane?
I said, yeah, yeah, yeah
I said, listen to the beat
Oh, I feel it in my feet
Oh, now it's my heart, Diane
Why don't you stop it?
Stop it
Stop it if you can
I want to spread the news that you're untrue
But Diane, what good would it do?
'Cause way down deep inside, I cry
Without you, little Diane, I'd die, oh
Yeah
Oh
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
The lyrics to Dion & The Belmonts's song "Little Diane" express the contradictory nature of a young boy's affections towards a girl named Diane. He expresses anger towards her for being "evil" and "untrue," yet he simultaneously confesses that he loves her and is deeply in pain without her. The boy's intense emotions towards Diane have left him feeling torn and vulnerable, unable to fully understand his own feelings. He acknowledges her negative qualities and how she tears his heart apart, yet he is unable to stop loving her. Despite the pain she causes him, he would still be lost without her.
The lyrics of "Little Diane" explore the emotional complexity of teenage love and the tumultuous feelings that can accompany it. The boy's feelings towards Diane shift from anger to love within the same verse, illustrating the fickle nature of young love. The repetition of "without you little Diane, I'd die" highlights his extreme dependency on her for his emotional wellbeing. The song captures the highs and lows of teenage romance and the overwhelming emotions that come with it.

Growing up I never thought much about Dion, but via YouTube I've now sampled quite a bit of his material - a ball of energetic talent who produced some really great music. Dion obviously knew what R&R should sound like; and he knew his audience. 8/2018
@Ben0001
Such great backing vocals from Sweep.
