Are you there with another girl instead of me
I hear your laughter and there's something I've got to know
Are you there with another girl instead of me
Well, I'm standing on your doorstep and I don't know what to do
Should I ring your doorbell or just walk away
My friends all say that you were never true
I see two silhouettes in the back of your window shade
Are you there with another girl when I am gone
I can't believe you'd break the promises that you made
If you're there with another girl, I can't go on
Oh, I only know I love you and I couldn't say goodbye
So if there's another, I don't want to know
If you should go, oh, I would surely die
Love requires faith, I've got a lot of faith but
I hear the music comin' out of your radio
Oh, I only know I love you and I couldn't say goodbye
So if there's another, I don't want to know
If you should go, oh, I would surely die
You would never leave me, hurt me or deceive me
I'm a fool to doubt you, worry so about you
Love requires faith, I've got a lot in me but
I hear the music coming out of your radio
The lyrics to Dionne Warwick's "Are You There" paints a heart-wrenching picture of a woman who suspects her lover is being unfaithful. The opening lines "I hear the music coming out of your radio, are you there with another girl instead of me" immediately set the tone for the rest of the song. The music serves as a metaphor for the lover's new relationship, which is contrasting with the singer's feelings of neglect and abandonment.
As the song progresses, we see the singer confront her lover, unable to determine what to do next. She stands on his doorstep, torn between ringing his doorbell or simply walking away. This indecision is also reflected in her line "Love requires faith, I've got a lot of faith," showcasing her willingness to believe he is still faithful despite all indications to the contrary.
The final verses reveal the singer's desperation and fear, with lines like "If you should go, oh, I would surely die" and "I'm a fool to doubt you, worry so about you." The music remains a constant presence, reminding the singer of what she could potentially lose if her lover did in fact leave her. The song ends on a bittersweet note as the singer acknowledges her love for her partner, despite the possibility of his infidelity.
Overall, Dionne Warwick's "Are You There" is a poignant portrayal of a woman grappling with the idea of losing the person she loves. The music serves as a constant reminder of the lover's potential betrayal, which only heightens the singer's fear and anxiety.
