Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
And drive me mad
If you can keep me
I wanna stay here with you forever
And I'll be glad
Yes I loves you, Porgy,
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
With his hot hands
If you can keep me
I wants to stay here with you forever
I've got my man
I loves you, Porgy,
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
And drive me mad
If you can keep me
I wanna stay here with you forever
I've got my man
Someday I know he's coming to call me
He's going to handle me and hold me
So, it' going to be like dying, Porgy
When he calls me
But when he comes I know I'll have to go
I loves you, Porgy,
Don't let him take me
Honey, don't let him handle me
And drive me mad
I wanna stay here with you forever
I've got my man
The lyrics of Dionne Warwick’s “I Loves You Porgy” is a plea to Porgy to protect her from her former lover who is coming back to take her away. The singer appeals to Porgy, whom she loves, to shield her from the hands of her former lover and prevent him from taking her away. She wants to stay with Porgy forever, and she’s glad to be with him.
The second verse of the song reiterates the opening statement of the first verse. The singer loves Porgy and implores him not to allow her former lover to take her away with his hot hands. She wants to remain with Porgy because she has already found her man.
In the last verse, the singer is aware that her former lover will one day come for her, and she fears that when he takes her away, it would be like dying. She still loves Porgy, and she implores him one more time not to let her former lover take her away. Even if her former lover comes, she knows she has to go, and that’s very painful.
