You still know what to do
You still know how to make me feel
There's no one else but you
And you think that things
Adjust the way they used to be
But I can see
It in your eyes
I see that you wanna run away
And in your eyes
I don't see the kind of love you say
Is in your heart
'Cause in your eyes there's another face
And not a trace of me
You still know when to touch
You still know when to call
And sometimes when you hold me close
I'd swear we had it all
Oh, it isn't that
You're not the man you used to be
It's what I see
There in your eyes
I see that you wanna run away
And in your eyes
I don't see the kind of love you say
Is in your heart
'Cause in your eyes there's another face
And not a trace of me
No, not a trace of me
The lyrics of Dionne Warwick’s song “In Your Eyes” speak about a relationship that has lost its spark. Despite the familiarity and comfort that still exist, Warwick’s partner no longer looks at her with the same love and affection as before. She notices the longing in his eyes and his desire to move on from the relationship. The singer’s keen perception of her partner's feelings is evident in the repeated line “I can see it in your eyes.”
Warwick acknowledges that her partner is still loving and caring in some ways. He knows what to say and do, and how to make her feel better. But despite this, she can sense that his heart is no longer in the relationship. The line “And not a trace of me” drives home the point that Warwick’s partner has entirely moved on.
Overall, the song creates a melancholic and bittersweet picture of a love that has faded away. The chord progression in “In Your Eyes” adds to the emotive impact of the song, creating a haunting and slightly tense atmosphere.
