Make It Easy on Yourself
Dionne Warwick Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, breaking up is so very hard to do

If you really love him
And there's nothing I can do
Don't try to spare my feelings
Just tell me that we're through

And make it easy on yourself
Make it easy on yourself
Cause breaking up is so very hard to do

And if the way I hold him
Can't compare to his caress
No words of consolation
Will make me miss you less

My darling, if this is goodbye
I just know I'm gonna cry
So run to him
Before you start crying too

And make it easy on yourself
Make it easy on yourself
Cause breaking up is so very hard to do

Oh, baby, it's so hard to do

Overall Meaning

In Dionne Warwick's song "Make It Easy on Yourself," the singer pleads with her love interest to end their relationship, even though it will be painful. The song is a simple ballad with a melody that is both soothing and sad. The opening lines express the difficulty of breaking up, and Warwick admits that even though she loves her partner, she cannot hold onto him anymore. She requests that he not try to protect her or cushion the blow of separation; it is better that he be honest and clear about ending things.

Warwick then conveys her anguish: she knows that she cannot compete with the intimacy and touch that her partner finds elsewhere. There are no words that will help her cope with the pain she feels. The singer steps back and accepts that if her partner chooses to leave, she will have to let him go. In the end, she begs him to make it "easy on yourself" and end their relationship quickly, without further pain or suffering.

The song's message is one of resignation and acceptance. Warwick does not want to cling to a relationship that is not working, but she recognizes the difficulty in letting go. Her words are simple but poignant, and the emotions are conveyed in her smooth and soulful voice.

@Niki Davis you are so right, when some of the Motown Artists like little Stevie Wonder, The Supremes etc toured America & the UK the audience was a handful and they weren't appreciated. The Beatles heard their sound and alot of their inspiration came from Motown. I'm from the UK and 61yrs old and I appreciate all music and Motown,Northern Soul, R&B, Rap, are respected highly by me, and I totally understand your opinion and agree. 💯🇬🇧

Yes!! The contribution to the WORLD is astounding...yet we are treated STILL like slaves in a Nation we not only built, but graced with our LOVE, SOUL, and culture...with National TREASURES like Dionne Warwick who has raised me and bathed me in the knowing of our greatness as a People. No sound is like this sound...no meaning to each note like the meaning she filled with each breath...this the work of a Mighty God to fill her with such talent and to bring it forth with what seems like effortless notes and such clarity of word and intention. She made a song come ALIVE for the composer. We are so blessed to have recorded the evidence so we may be bathed over and over with such grace.

@Sprite Whats old

George Beier

Yes - you know the power's there and she uses it sparingly. Her interpretations are always so thoughtful, reflective. And then she casually throws down casual vocal acrobatics.

Uriyah Bonafide

@Sprite I am old and very proud of it. I got to see many great things in my life time.
