Once she came to me
When you smiled I looked into your eyes
And I knew I'd be loving you
And then you touched my hand
And I learned April dreams can come true
Oh are we just April fools
If we're just April fools
I don't care, true love has found us now
Little did we know
Where the road would lead
Here we are a million miles away from the past
Travelin' so fast now
There's no turning back
If our sweet April dream doesn't last
Are we just April fools
Who can't see all the danger around us
If we're just April fools
I don't care, we'll find our way somehow
No need to be afraid
True love has found us now
The April Fools by Dionne Warwick is a love ballad that explores the hope and uncertainty of two lovers who have found each other in a dreamlike state. In the opening verse, the singer describes a dream where her lover appeared to her, and she realized that she would love this person deeply. She explains that their connection was instantaneous, and she realized this when they smiled and looked into each other's eyes. The singer highlights how their connection deepened as they touched each other's hand, and she understood that their love was real and could overcome any obstacle.
However, the uncertainty of their love is foregrounded in the chorus, where the singer wonders if they are just "April fools" who cannot see the danger around them. This sentiment suggests that their love may be fleeting or not sustainable, and that they may be making a mistake by falling in love. The second verse develops this idea, as the singer explains that the couple had no idea where their love would lead when they first fell in love. She highlights that they are now a million miles away from their past, and that they cannot turn back now that they are traveling so fast. But in spite of these challenges, the singer remains committed to their love, and she tells her lover that there is no need to be afraid, as true love has found them.
Overall, The April Fools is a song that celebrates the power of love to overcome obstacles and bring people together, even when the future is uncertain. The song is marked by its dreamlike quality, as the singer speaks about a love that appeared to her in a dream and wonders if it is real. The chorus suggests that love can make people vulnerable to danger, but the singer remains optimistic that their love can withstand anything that comes their way.
