My true love was true
I of course replied
"Something here inside
Cannot be denied"
They said someday you'll find
All who love are blind
You don't realize
Smoke gets in your eyes
So I chaffed and I gaily laughed
To think they would doubt my love
Yet today, my love has flown away
I am without my love
Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say
"When a lovely flame dies,
Smoke gets in your eyes."
The song "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" by Dirk Bogarde is a poignant ballad about love and loss. The opening lines of the song talk about how someone asked the singer how they knew their true love was true. The singer replied that there was something inside them that couldn't be denied, a feeling that their love was real and undeniable. However, the people he's talking to said that someday he would find that love often makes people blind. When you're in love, you don't always see things clearly. The smoke gets in your eyes, and you can't see the truth.
The next verse talks about how the singer laughed off his friends' doubts about his love. But now that his love has flown away, he's left without his love, and his laughing friends are now deriding him and his tears that he can't hide. He smiles and says that when a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes. This line reinforces the idea that love can be blinding, but when it's gone, we can see clearly again. It's a bittersweet reminder that even though love can hurt us, it's still worth pursuing.
Overall, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" is a beautiful song about the ups and downs of love. It's a reminder that even though love can blind us, it's still worth pursuing. When love is gone, we can see things more clearly again, but the memories and the pain linger on.

Smoke gets in your eyes
How one may be affected by the smoke

Now laughing friends deride
Presently, my friends who laughed at me now mock
Tears I cannot hide

"When a lovely flame dies,
That when a beautiful fire goes out
Smoke gets in your eyes."
One is left with tears and sadness.
