The Dirty Dancing sound is at times all of the above: lo-fi, noisy, angular and anthemic, with touches of darkwave, a post-punk edge, a reverbed atmosphere, and handclaps galore. Depending on the track, you can hear influences as varied as The Kills, Joy Division, Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The Gun Club, Talking Heads, and even a little T. Rex...

You Don't Own Me
Dirty Dancing Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm not just one of your pretty toys
You don't own me
Don't say I can't go with other boys
And don't tell me what to do
Don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
You don't own me
Don't try to change me in any way
You don't own me
Don't tie me down 'cause I'd never stay
I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you
I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please
And don't tell me what to do
Don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display
I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do...
In the song "You Don't Own Me," the female singer retorts to a controlling partner, insisting that she is not just a pretty toy to be owned and controlled. She asserts her independence, claiming that she is young and loves to live her life the way she wants. The singer also demands her space, making it clear that she won't be tied down or put on display by her partner. The song is an anthem for empowerment, with the singer refusing to be silenced or oppressed by societal norms.
The tone of the song is confident and determined, with the singer standing up for herself against her oppressor. The song is also a reflection of the feminist movement of the era, as it received positive reception both commercially and critically. It is often regarded as a feminist classic and a symbol of female empowerment.

I remember my first act of defiance (as a religious teenaged girl in the South): After some 'last straw' disagreement with my parents, I stormed off (gasp!), I locked my bedroom door for the very first time in my life, and I turned up my stereo ALL THE WAY for the first time (with my parents home!), and I BLARED this song on repeat for like half an hour. (In hindsight, I can't believe I got away with it that long!) Maybe it's the day my teen rage just exploded... But I was one of those kids who somehow didn't realise how angry they were, so the moment that erupted was just spectacular :) Wonder if my Mormon folks would remember that?!
