Ghosts
Dirty Vegas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All I ever wanted was
To feel the way you feel
All I ever wanted was a chance
To make it real
When I'm alone with you
It feels like I'm bulletproof

All I ever wanted was a place out by the sun
To watch the world go by
And take each day as it comes
All I ever wanted was a chance to catch my breath
To see the world go by
And lay my ghost's to rest
[Give me a chance to catch my breath]
[So I can lay my ghost's to rest]

Ask me tomorrow
What I thought of yesterday
Ask me tomorrow
All the things I can't explain
When I'm alone with you
It feels like I'm bulletproof

All that I ever wanted
Was to lay my ghost's to rest
All that I ever wanted
Was a chance to catch my breath
All that I ever wanted....

Was to lay my ghost's to rest

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dirty Vegas's song Ghosts convey the desire to escape from the past and to find peace and contentment in the present. The core message of the song is that the singer has been haunted by past experiences and emotions that have weighed heavily on him, and he yearns to put them to rest. The repetition of the phrase "lay my ghosts to rest" highlights the importance of this desire.

The first verse captures the longing to experience the kind of emotional connection and invincibility that one might feel when in love. The second verse shifts towards a desire for inner peace and perspective. The chorus reaffirms that the goal is to overcome past trauma so that the present can be enjoyed without being overshadowed by the past. The repeated refrain "When I'm alone with you, it feels like I'm bulletproof" reinforces that the love that the singer expresses is his source of strength and protection.

Towards the end of the song, the lyrics take a more introspective and philosophical turn. The singer acknowledges that the past is always a part of him, but he wants to be able to move beyond it and enjoy the present. The lines "Ask me tomorrow what I thought of yesterday / Ask me tomorrow all the things I can't explain" suggest that the singer is open to change and ready to let go of the past. The final repetition of "All that I ever wanted was to lay my ghosts to rest" brings the song to a close, emphasizing the central theme.

I remember this song from when I was younger. I remember the smell of the grass, the trees, and how the sun felt. This song is definitely one of my top without a doubt.

I remember watching the video for this song on MTV in the wee small hours of summer 2002. Life was so much simpler and better back then. The mid 80's to the mid 00's, is by far favourite time span in terms of pretty much everything, music, sport and life in general. The world was a better place before the internet and things like instagram and tiktok took over! My life went downhill after the mid 00's, and i totally lost interest in modern pop music some time in the early 2010's, but as soon as i hear this song and see this video, i'm back to those carefree days of summer 2002 again.
