Magnets
Disclosure feat. Lorde Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Never really felt bad about it
As we drank deep from a lie
Cause I felt melting magnets babe
The second I saw you through half-shut eyes

Smoke and sunset, off Mulholland
He was talking, I was wondering 'bout
You and that girl, she your girlfriend?
Face from heaven, bet the world she don't know
Pretty girls don't know the things that I know
Walk my way, I'll share the things that you want

Uh-oh, dancin' past the point of no return
Let go, we can free ourselves of all we've learned
I love this secret language that we're speaking
Say it to me, let's embrace the point of no return
Let's embrace the point of no return
Let's embrace the point of no return

Never really thought we would make it
We be thinking about what could have been
But we've had a record summer, can't turn it down, oh
Now I don't wanna see the envy again

Smoke and sunset, off Mulholland
He was talking, I was wondering 'bout
You and that girl, she your girlfriend?
Face from heaven, bet the world she don't know
Pretty girls don't know the things that I know
Walk my way, I'll share the things that you want

Uh-oh, dancin' past the point of no return
Let go, we can free ourselves of all we've learned
I love this secret language that we're speaking

Say it to me, let's embrace the point of no return
Let's embrace the point of no return

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Disclosure's song "Magnets" tell the story of a secret love affair, one that is hidden from the public eye but burns hot and passionate. The first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song, with the singer describing their attraction to someone they just met at a party or event. They feel the "melting magnets" of attraction as soon as they catch sight of the other person, even though they know that the relationship is built on lies and deception.

The second verse goes on to describe the setting of the encounter - a sunset off Mulholland Drive, a famous winding road in Los Angeles known for its scenic views. The singer notices that the person they are interested in is with someone else, another girl who they assume is his girlfriend. Despite this, they continue to exchange secret glances and flirtatious gestures, communicating in a "secret language" that only they can understand.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the danger and excitement of this secret affair, with the singer acknowledging that they are "dancin' past the point of no return." They are willing to risk everything for the thrill of the moment, to "free ourselves of all we've learned." The final line of the chorus is both an invitation and a warning - "let's embrace the point of no return" implies that the singer is ready to take things to the next level, but also acknowledges that there may be consequences if they go too far.

Overall, "Magnets" is a compelling exploration of the forbidden and taboo, with Disclosure's signature electronic beats providing a pulsing backdrop to the lyrics.

I keep coming back to this. This is a first-rate production. I have no IDEA how hard it is to get something this right. The acting. The editing. The wardrobe. The effects. The story. It is excellent, from the very topmost top drawer. And that is before you consider the acting from the two leads - make that three leads. Getting all that to come together on the day is seismic. Listen to me, foolish, wittering on. I haven't even mentioned the reason why we're all here. What a fukn absolutely amazing track. All built on teenage energy. So jealous of the talent. The boys and Lorde had one helluva successful collaboration. Absolutely everybody at the top of their game. And it's five years ago as I write. Raw talent. Hate them.

“Raw Talent. Hate them.” SO relatable!! Lol

@yousefhussain15

How can one make such a master piece?

@ashujam

Couldn’t have agreed more. We need Lorde rn 🥴
