Oblivion
Discourse Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
pro war and pro life
The divine right guides
those with god on their side
The enlightened few
procreate and destroy
Self-entitled to
When I'm called to bear witness
I'll attest to the sickness
that I've seen from your crusade
Crushed spirits, sanctified hate
Madness overtakes the masses
Sanity decays, dictated by majority
The visions realized, the prophesy fulfilled
Welcome the destruction from which we can't rebuild
Oblivion awaits
These lyrics from Discourse's song Oblivion comment on the destructive and dangerous nature of war, highlighting how it is often justified by those who believe they have a divine right or mission to carry out. The opening lines "To arms" they cry / pro war and pro life" suggest a call to action, urging listeners to join the ranks of those who advocate for war, often under the guise of protecting life. The irony in this is that war often leads to the loss of countless lives, as well as other forms of destruction.
The lyrics go on to criticize the so-called enlightened few who claim superiority over others, and who see themselves as entitled to do whatever they wish, regardless of the consequences. When the singer talks about bearing witness to the sickness he has seen from their crusade, he is likely referring to the pain and suffering caused by war and other destructive actions, while "Crushed spirits, sanctified hate" suggests that the proponents of war may themselves be victims of the destruction they bring about.
The song makes a powerful statement about the destructive power of human nature, and warns that if we continue down the path of war and destruction, we may eventually face our own oblivion.
