Dishwalla, which emerged out of the early stages of post-grunge, is composed of J.R. Richards (vocals), Scot Alexander (bass), Rodney Browning Cravens (guitar), Jim Wood (keyboards), and George Pendergast (drums). They spent the mid-'90s touring with the likes of Sheryl Crow, Blind Melon, and the Goo Goo Dolls in support of Pet Your Friends. Prior to making a second album, the band was caught in the middle of the Polygram/Universal merger and such a move left Dishwalla pondering what to do next. Their second album, And You Think You Know What Life's About, was released in 1998; promotion and sales were lackluster due to label downsizing. Dishwalla's time with A&M was short-lived and exhausting because of such corporate behavior, but they stuck it out to contribute their cover version of "Policy of Truth" for the Depeche Mode tribute album For the Masses. By the new millennium, Dishwalla left behind major-market America for a third album. They signed with Immergent while Pendergrast parted ways with the band. Pete Maloney, a drummer picked up on the 1998 tour, resumed percussion duties. In 2002, Dishwalla issued their experimental third album Opaline (Immergent), quickly followed by 2003's Live... Greetings from the Flow State. A self-titled album produced by Sylvia Massy (Tool, System of a Down), Bill Szymczyk, and Ryan Greene (NOFX, Nerf Herder) followed in 2005 before the band went on indefinite hiatus.
Three years passed before Dishwalla would return in 2008. Debuting a lineup that joined original members Alexander, Pendergast, Cravens, and Wood with new vocalist Justin Fox, the band hit the road, touring sporadically over the following years. They would not return to the studio until 2016, when they began recording their first album in a decade. Juniper Road arrived in 2017.

I was looking for myself again
Trying to put back all the pieces
Back to the way they were
Sometimes it's not so easy
When you have so many voices
Tell you what to do
But I can't be too sure
Far away as we shoot across the sky
Far away to the corners of my mind
Sooner or later
It will slowly come back to me
If I could build a spaceship
Would you fly away with me?
Or would you stay?
A million miles an hour
Flying circles as we orbit 'round earth
If I stuck my head out the window
Do you think it'd clear my head?
Or would it burst?
I guess it's all the same
But at least it wouldn't hurt
Far away as we shoot across the sky
Far away to the corners of my mind
And the voices in my head
I think they've finally gone away
Far away
Far away
Sooner or later
They will slowly come back to me
The lyrics to Dishwalla's song "Far Away" are intricately connected to themes of identity, self-discovery, and mental health. The song begins with the singer reflecting on a recent attempt to find himself, describing it as an effort to "put back all the pieces" of his life. However, he struggles with the many voices that he hears telling him what to do, making it difficult for him to truly understand who he is.
The second half of the song contains more concrete imagery, as the singer asks the listener if they would fly away with him in a spaceship. He imagines traveling a million miles an hour and flying circles around Earth, hoping that it might clear his head. However, he is also aware that this may not be the case, and his lyrics suggest that he is resigned to the fact that his problems will eventually catch up with him. As he sings, "Sooner or later, They will slowly come back to me."
Overall, "Far Away" is a song that grapples with the idea of mental health, particularly the difficulty of finding oneself and understanding one's own identity. The imagery of space travel and the desire to leave one's problems behind is a potent metaphor that many people can relate to. However, the song ultimately acknowledges that this is not a realistic solution, and that we must deal with our problems head-on.
