Away In A Manger
Disney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Away in a Manger
Away in a Manger,
No crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down His sweet head
The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay
The cattle are lowing
The poor Baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes
I love Thee, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side,
'Til morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus,
I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever
And love me I pray
Bless all the dear children
In Thy tender care

And take us to heaven
To live with Thee there

Overall Meaning

The song "Away in a Manger" describes the birth of Jesus Christ and the manger where he was laid after his birth. The first verse sets the stage by describing how there was no crib available, so Jesus was laid down on some hay. The second verse describes how the stars in the sky looked down on him while he was sleeping. The third verse describes how the cattle were lowing (creating a commotion) and woke him up, but despite being a baby, he didn't cry. This stanza also includes the singer's love and plea to Jesus to accompany and stay by their side through the night until morning comes.

The fourth verse is a continuation of the singer's plea to Jesus, asking him to stay close forever and to love them. The final verse is a blessing for all children, asking that they all be blessed and cared for by Jesus himself, and that they be taken to heaven to live with him. The beauty of this song is in its simplicity and is a representation of the deep love and care shown for Jesus by the individuals who first saw him on the day of his birth.
