Ask the Dying
Distorted Memory Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fall from upon that cross
That noose around your neck binds tightly
Swing from that rope of death
All angel's song is what your mouth sings
Hear the death call, it sings it's song for you
Taste the rotten stench, of blood and poisoned fruit
Cry from the pain you feel, it's how it has to be
Death is the only way in which the living see

Ask the dying, it is the only way
Ask the dying, hear what they say
Ask the dying, there is no other way
Ask the dying, don't take the time to pray

Fall from upon that cross
To which your hands are nailed

Swing from that rope of death
Until there is no life left.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Distorted Memory's song "Ask the Dying" are focused on the theme of death and the perspective of those who are dying. The lyrics describe a person who is experiencing the pain and suffering of their own death. They feel trapped, their hands are nailed to the cross, and the noose around their neck binds them tightly. The singer acknowledges the inevitability of death and the pain that comes with it. They talk about the stench of death, the taste of blood and poisoned fruit, and the cries of agony that come with it. The singer implores us to ask the dying for insight, as they have faced death and know what it is like. They suggest that death is the only way in which the living can truly understand life.

The lyrics also suggest that the idea of prayer is pointless in the face of death, as it won't change the inevitable. The song seems to be a commentary on the human struggle with death and a call to embrace it as a necessary part of life.

Overall, the song presents a bleak perspective on death, acknowledging its pain and inevitability while urging listeners to seek out the wisdom of those who are dying.

The unsettling part is the Caothic errr... I mean Catholic church actually performs this occult ritual since at least the 13th century.

there are lots of details but it is roughly like this:

An innocent/pure/untainted young subject/victim (preferably under the age of 21 although older people might work too if untainted) is wrapped in linen fabric in a mummy-like manner.

The Bishop or Cardinal chants a "special prayer" along with his group of 12 chosen priests

Then a noose is tied around the neck and the victim is hung well above a ritual fire, to be smoked but not burned, the smoke symbolizing the barrier between what we can and can´t see in this realm.

While the victim is asphyxiating a "higher entity" is supposed to channel through the victim´s body and for about 3 minutes (or as long as the poor victim survives) this entity allegedly will answer truthfully any question the bishop makes, to uncover a lie or to know about the future........., it is believed absolutely any question can be answered.

Once the victim dies the barrier must be sealed to keep the entity from crossing between realms, so while the priests chant a "contention prayer" the Bishop/Cardinal cuts the noose and the victim´s corpse falls onto the fire, they chant until the body is incinerated and thus they close the breach.

A rather horrible ceremony for the "men of god" if you ask me.......
