What Gets You Alone
Divine Fits Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jessica please
Take out insurance on me
And when you leave
Don’t forget to keep yourself
Keep yourself alright

'Cause down at the club
They’re playing number after number
So nice
Feels better
Keeps you up all night
Keeps you up all night

But I feel alone
Hanging in the elevator
Take me home
'Cause my love is my love is lost
It is lost

I’ll never never know
What gets you when you’re alone
I’ll never never know
What gets you alone

So out on the street
I feel it coming
Felt it walk up to me
And yes it moved me
I felt alone, hanging in the elevator
Take me home cause my love is my love is strange,
Strange

My my my my my my my heart’s a mess
Heart’s a mess
But it moved me
I let it fall

I’ll never never never know
What gets you alone

What gets you when you’re alone
I’ll never never never know

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "What Gets You Alone" are a mixture of emotions and uncertainty, touching on the themes of love, loneliness, and individuality. The singer of the song pleads with Jessica to take out insurance on him and reminds her to keep herself alright when she leaves. He is aware that they might be separated for some reason and is worried about their safety in his absence. However, he lets himself be carried away by the music at the club, which is playing number after number, and feels better because it keeps him up all night.

Despite the jovial atmosphere at the club, the singer feels alone, hanging in the elevator, and wishes to go home because his love is lost. He acknowledges that he will never know what it is that gets her when she is alone. The chorus repeats this sentiment, underlining the sense of uncertainty and resignation.

While walking down the street, the singer feels that something strange is coming towards him, and he lets it move him. Now his heart is a mess, but he doesn't regret letting it fall. The closing chorus acknowledges that the singer will never know what gets her alone.

Overall, the song seems to be about the uncertainty of love and how individual experiences are hard to share and articulate. The singer's feelings of loneliness and self-doubt are compounded by the sense that he will never fully understand what his partner is going through.

Their music is pretty good, they deserve the best.

Stuie Malan

Yes. Yes it does. He's dividing his time between the two bands. My main gripe Britt deserves to be the lead and not shoved in the background.

MusashiFilms

Stuie, at some point you'll have to accept that artists are doing what *they* want to do. Daniel isn't dividing his time; he's doing exactly what he wants with *his* time. Besides, if you think he's been 'shoved in the background' you obviously haven't listened to the record yet. It has Spoon style all over it.

fuck you cunts

I wanna see the video of them playing 1999.

Sean Clarke

"Deserves to be the lead". Clearly, a value judgment that needs to come into play here, rather than an expression of what you would like to see. Also, god forbid that the band itself would be allowed to decide how they want to play, record, and divide the duties. Finally, how is Britt being shoved in the background? Because he isn't singing lead on this song? He's sings lead on at least 5 songs on the record and backup vox on the rest. Out of an 11 song record, that's hardly in the background.

I'm wrong. I still like Spoon better but my second comment was made purely out of ignorance. I'm sorry for that. I should learn when to keep my mouth shut. Also keep in mind that all of this is coming from a place of honesty and not sarcasm. Yeah a guy on the internet just openly and honestly admitted he was wrong.

MusashiFilms

Does it matter? I don't think it does.
