-08- Silent House
Dixie Chicks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

These walls have eyes
Rows of photographs
And faces like mine
Who do we become
Without knowing where
We started from

It's true I'm missing you
As I stand alone in your room

Everyday that will pass you by
Every name that you won't recall
Everything that you made by hand
Everything that you know by heart

And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this silent house

One room
Two single beds
In the closet hangs
Your favorite dress
The books that you read
Are in scattered piles
Of paper shreds

Everything that you made by hand
Everything that you know by heart

And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this silent house
Silent house

In the garden off the living room
A chill fills the air
And the lilies bloom

And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this

And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this silent house

Silent house

Overall Meaning

In "Silent House," Dixie Chicks sing about the aftermath of losing someone close to you. The song opens with the lines "These walls have eyes, Rows of photographs, And faces like mine." These lines suggest that the walls of the house have memories and stories to tell, as if they have witnessed everything that happened within them. The photographs on the walls capture moments, and the faces resemble the singer's. The lyrics that follow speak of trying to connect with the pieces left behind by the person who has died. The line "Everyday that will pass you by, Every name that you won't recall" highlights the importance of memories and how they fade with time. The singer will try to remember everything and carry it on, but they also want to let the person's memory fade away to allow them to move on with their life.

I'm a fan of Neil Finn
When I heard him sing this beautifull song I discovered it was written by the Dixie chicks & I was mesmerized
This version is epic & tops all covers but Neil does a gorgeous version
I now wake up some morning with it in my head & have to play me a hit with my coffee
One of the most heartfelt songs I've heard for a long time
Thankyou Neil

Deep , personal , meaningful , melodic and performed beautifully , a perfect eulogy to Natalie’s grandmother culminating into a perfect song ......

@EnglishMike

Natalie Maines' grandfather first told me about this song. Just by chance, many moons ago, I played a round of golf with him in Austin, Texas. A sprightly old man well into his 80s and still walking the course, I had no idea who he was until he told me about his famous granddaughter. He went on to tell me about his wife and her long hard journey with Altzheimer's, and that Natalie had written a song about it. It was quite moving, I recall.

@ashley1994 When you play golf at a public course, they prefer to send people out in foursomes, so if you book a tee time for just two people, they'll add one or two more players to the group -- typically a single player or two who just show up without booking a time.

And it just so happened that a couple of times when me and my friend showed up at one of the local golf courses in Austin, Texas, Natalie's grandpa was added to our group. He was a pleasure to play with.

Just recently we ended up being teamed up with Jason Roberts, a Grammy winning Western swing singer and fiddle player who lives in Austin!

What a great story! I had always figured it was written for the sisters' family.

@EnglishMike

@@cristinaimpoverished7435 Thanks. Sadly, it's all too common. My own father recently passed away at 93. He had a long and happy life, for which the family is grateful, but the last few years were tough on him and my mother as dementia took it's toll.
