Formed in 1989 in Dallas, Texas, the band is composed of founding members (and sisters) Martie Erwin Maguire and Emily Erwin Robison, and lead singer Natalie Maines.
The trio is currently ranked as the highest-selling female musical group in the USA, according to RIAA Gold & Platinum album certifications. As of 2012, The Chicks had won 13 Grammy Awards. While The Chicks continues, Maguire and Robison are writing and recording as Court Yard Hounds as of Feb 2010. The Dixie Chicks renamed the band in 2020 to The Chicks dropping Dixie from the official name as the name had the word 'Dixie' referencing the American Mason–Dixon line, which separated the free and slave-owning southern states.

Robin Lynn Macy was an original bandmember, as was Laura Lynch. Macy left the group in 1992, while Lynch was replaced by Natalie Maines in 1995.

The group aroused considerable controversy for publicly denouncing President George W. Bush and the imminent invasion of Iraq during the European leg of their Top of the World tour supporting Home. Many country music stations immediately pulled their music from the air, and the band received criticism from many corners of the media.

I watched my mom go through a horrible abusive controlling relationship. I watched my older sister and brother get thrown out of the house, and then eventually me for the 2nd time. I was 15 and by 16 I was on the streets. I would go to my moms work everyday to see her, sometimes good times, sometimes bad. I watched her walk away from me more times than I like to remember. I remember being so angry that my feet were so wet and cold, and I had no where I belonged. And thinking of how she is at home, warm and comfortable. I never stopped to think that maybe the shit I endured with my siblings might now be turned on her and my then baby brother. I went through schools trying to foster care me. Living in different friends houses, to not graduating but getting my g.e.d., to never having prom or enjoying my teenage years, to being a lost adult. I’m almost 28 now, me and my mom rarely talk. But I listen to this and remember laying on her legs watching tv. Walking to the ice cream store miles away my sister her and I. Riding the greyhound from Sacramento to Washington to escape a different abusive relationship, watching her buy a pack of grandmas cookies with her last dollar at a stop and only eating 1 and sharing the rest with my sister and I. I remember running through the sprinklers at the ranch in Sacramento. I remember feeling safe with her. I love you Rebecca Ann appling.

I lost my mom when I was 3 months old. Was adopted into a horrible family and had a very violent, traumatic childhood. I made the decision to break the cycle and not put my kids thru that hell. I decided never to deal out discipline while I was angry or emotional. When my youngest was about 3, I was trying to put him down for a nap so that I could finish cleaning. He was refusing and I was also arguing with his dad, which didn’t help my mood. I had this 💿 playing, a few songs prior to this one. I was frazzled, on the verge of tears and this song came on. I stopped and started singing to help calm myself. Oddly enough, my singing was what ultimately helped my son go to sleep. When i was abt 9 months old, my older brother was run over. He had a different mum but we had the same dad. My dad never really never met him either but my mum was good friends with his mum. He was two years older than me. He was run over by his step father. That was the day i lost my bestfriend. They played this song at his funeral and my parents balled their eyes out. Little me didnt know why everyone was so sad and i was confused as to why my older brother lay lifeless in a coffin and why he wasnt playing with me. Im now 14 and my mum recently showed me this song and explained everything. Now i cant stop listening to it and when i do i cant help but feel like hes here with me. Even tho i didnt really know him he was still a big part of my life when he was here. I really want to text his mother and talked to her more about him and find out all about him but its a very sensitive topic and im scared she wont wanna talk to me. But thank you dixie chicks this song is amazing and there isnt a better song for my brother than this. ❤️

I was 8 months pregnant with my very first child but when went for my check up they couldn't find a heart beat so the doctors made me have him and I was in labor for 78 hours and when I had him I held him kissed his list hands and toes and I told him ik m that I was so so sorry but I would always love him no matter what or if I ever j ad any other kids!!!!!
