The trio is currently ranked as the highest-selling female musical group in the USA, according to RIAA Gold & Platinum album certifications. As of 2012, The Chicks had won 13 Grammy Awards. While The Chicks continues, Maguire and Robison are writing and recording as Court Yard Hounds as of Feb 2010. The Dixie Chicks renamed the band in 2020 to The Chicks dropping Dixie from the official name as the name had the word 'Dixie' referencing the American Mason–Dixon line, which separated the free and slave-owning southern states.
Robin Lynn Macy was an original bandmember, as was Laura Lynch. Macy left the group in 1992, while Lynch was replaced by Natalie Maines in 1995.
The group aroused considerable controversy for publicly denouncing President George W. Bush and the imminent invasion of Iraq during the European leg of their Top of the World tour supporting Home. Many country music stations immediately pulled their music from the air, and the band received criticism from many corners of the media.

Lookin' out on a vacant field
Used to be filled with burly N tobacco
Now he knows it never will
Brother found work in Indiana
Sister's a nurse at the old folks home
Momma's still cooking too much for supper
Been a longtime gone
No I ain't hoed a row since I don't know when
Longtime gone
And I ain't coming back again
Delia plays that ol' church piano
Sittin out on her daddy's farm
She always thought that we'd be together
Lord I never meant to do her harm
Said she could hear me singin' in the choir
Me, I heard of another song
I caught wind and hit the road runnin'
And lord I been a long time gone
Been a longtime gone
Lord I ain't had a prayer since I don't know when
Longtime gone
And it ain't coming back again
Now me I went to Nashville
Tryin' to be the big deal
Playin' down on broadway
Gettin' there the hard way
Livin' from a tip jar
Sleepin' in my car
Hockin' my guitar
Yeah I'm going be a star
Now me and Delia sing every sunday
Watchin' the children and the garden grow
Listen to the radio to hear what's cookin'
But the music ain't got no soul
Now they sound tired but they don't sound Haggard
They got money but they don't have Cash
They got junior but they don't have Hank
I think, I think, I think... the rest is...
Longtime gone
No I ain't hit the roof since I don't know when
Longtime gone
And it ain't coming back I said
A longtime gone
No I ain't honked a horn since I don't know when
Longtime gone
And it ain't coming back again
I said a longtime longtime longtime gone
Oh it's been a longtime
Longtime longtime longtime gone
Oh it's been a long time gone
Longtime, longtime, longtime gone
Yeah Yeah
The Dixie Chicks' "Long Time Gone" is a song about moving forward without looking back. The song is about leaving behind past relationships and failed dreams in search of something new. The song begins with a description of a life that was once rich and full of promise, but is now vacant and empty. The singer then goes on to talk about her own journey, from leaving home and searching for success in Nashville, to eventually returning home and settling down with a family of her own.
The song has been interpreted as a commentary on the state of country music in the early 2000s, with the Dixie Chicks criticizing the lack of authenticity in modern country music. The lyrics mention country legends like Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Hank Williams, Sr., and suggest that modern country artists have lost touch with the soul of traditional country music.
Overall, "Long Time Gone" is a song about moving forward and embracing new opportunities, while still honoring the past and the traditions that came before.

Which makes sense as the third verse seems is more than a bit of an insult about the state of country musics when it was written
"We listen to the radio to hear what's cookin'
But the music ain't got no soul
Now they sound tired but they don't sound Haggard (Merle Haggard)
They've got money but they don't have Cash (Johnny Cash)
They got Junior but they don't have Hank (Hank Williams Sr.)
I think, I think, I think, the rest is
A long time gone
No, I ain't hit the roof since I don't know when
Long time gone, and it ain't coming back
I said a long time gone
No, I ain't honked the horn since I don't know when
Long time gone, and it ain't coming back again"
The song was written by bluegrass musician Darrell Scott, originally recorded on Scott's 2000 album two years before The Chicks version was released.

Heard it about a million times and it still brings me fantastic joy every time
@MateoLobo319
Long Time Gone is definitely one of my favorite songs by the Dixie Chicks. It's sad that they aren't as popular as they used to be. I'm still a fan of theirs to this day.
@dakelei
They would be if the "God and country" crowd hadn't turned on them so savagely.
@MateoLobo319
@Chris Davies yeah I know it's sad.
@freshfarmster44
@Chris Davies, You got that right, home of the free and land of the brave, but only if you believe in being free in the way we feel brave and pray.
@brentkelly9864
Technically, the song is "by" Darrell Scott, but The Chicks certainly helped popularize the tune. Great song and The Chicks rendition is wonderful.

I'm a metal head, but man back in the early 2000's, that Home album was on my CD rotation constantly. So good. Love the bluegrass aesthetic. So yeah, that's my one CD I have in my collection that people are like "WTF, did a gf or someone leave this here?!", and I'm like no, man, lets listen to it!
@Mothermetalhead
Dude same though 😅
