Mississippi
Dixie Chicks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The moon is full and my arms are empty
All night long I've pleaded and cried
You always said the day that you would leave
Would be a cold day in July

Your bags are packed not a word is spoken
I guess we said everything with good-bye
Time moves so slow and promises get broken
On this cold day in July

Sun's comin' up comin' up down on Main Street
Children shout as they're running out to play
Head in my hands here I am
Standing in my bare feet
Watching you drive away
Watching you drive away

You said that we were gonna last forever
You said our love would never die
It looks like spring and
It feels like sunny weather
But it's a cold day in July

Sun's comin' up comin' up down on Main Street
Children shout as they're running out to play
Head in my hands here I am
Standing in my bare feet

Watching you drive away
Watching you drive away

Overall Meaning

Dixie Chicks' "Mississippi" is a poignant song that powerfully captures the emotional aftermath of an unexpected breakup. The lyrics depict the singer's heartache as she watches her partner pack up and leave on a "cold day in July" after promising that their love would last forever. The opening lines, "The moon is full and my arms are empty / All night long I've pleaded and cried," immediately set the tone of the song as a mournful tale of lost love.

The singer is left alone with her thoughts as the world keeps moving around her. She watches children play and the sun rise on Main Street, trying to come to grips with the reality of the breakup. She reflects on the broken promises of eternal love and how time seems to move slowly and without mercy: "Time moves so slow and promises get broken / On this cold day in July." The imagery of standing in bare feet while the other person drives away also emphasizes the feeling of vulnerability and being left behind.

Overall, "Mississippi" is a beautifully crafted song that captures the raw emotions of heartbreak and betrayal. The lyrics are relatable and heart-wrenching, making it a beloved song among Dixie Chicks fans.

Every step of the way we walk the line
Your days are numbered, so are mine
Time is pilin' up, we struggle and we scrape
We're all boxed in, nowhere to escape

City's just a jungle, more games to play
Trapped in the heart of it, trying to get away
I was raised in the country, I been workin' in the town
I been in trouble ever since I set my suitcase down

Got nothing for you, I had nothing before
Don't even have anything for myself anymore
Sky full of fire, pain pourin' down
Nothing you can sell me, I'll see you around

All my powers of expression and thoughts so sublime
Could never do you justice in reason or rhyme
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Well, the devil's in the alley, mule's in the stall
Say anything you want to, I have heard it all
I was thinkin' about the things that Rosie said
I was dreaming I was sleeping in Rosie's bed

Walking through the leaves, falling from the trees
Feeling like a stranger nobody sees
So many things that we never will undo
I know you're sorry, I'm sorry too

Some people will offer you their hand and some won't
Last night I knew you, tonight I don't
I need somethin' strong to distract my mind
I'm gonna look at you 'til my eyes go blind

Well I got here following the southern star
I crossed that river just to be where you are
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Well my ship's been split to splinters and it's sinking fast
I'm drownin' in the poison, got no future, got no past
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free
I've got nothin' but affection for all those who've sailed with me

Everybody movin' if they ain't already there
Everybody got to move somewhere
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow
Things should start to get interesting right about now

My clothes are wet, tight on my skin
Not as tight as the corner that I painted myself in
I know that fortune is waitin' to be kind
So give me your hand and say you'll be mine

Well, the emptiness is endless, cold as the clay
You can always come back, but you can't come back all the way
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

I've really missed the Dixie Chick. I hated what was done to them but they didn't lose that powerful sound. They still knock my socks off.

Good question.
I don't know either.
Now I'm curious.
What did they do to The Dixie Chicks?

Todd Roane

they did it to themselves

Michael Jensen

@Todd Roane Damn the 1st Amendment. Who do these citizens of the United States think they are, speaking up and using their 1st Amendment rights? The audacity.

Todd Roane

Michael Jensen With great freedom comes great responsibility โ€“ speak up, use your first amendment rights but be responsible and accountable for the consequences.
