Storm Out on the Sea
Dixie Chicks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As a girl I watched the sailing ships Like white birds on the sea Their sails were wings that rode the wind My heart longed to be free I saw you standing by the sea But your hand was warm against my face The beach was dark as death Your kiss was my life's breath And lovin' you's like drowning in a storm out on the sea Put your arms around me darling Now and rescue me And lovin' you's like drowning and I feel so all alone Put your arms around me You never said you'd stay with me And I'll never sail alone I never tied your hands Where they can walk dry-footed The way some frightened women do to keep their love on land In their lover's arms they hide And never fear the tide Or the moon upon the water Loke lost sailors seeking land And the clouds came low and lonely The rain upon my body beat me down upon the sand Soon I learned that lovin' you means drowning in the sea And you turned your back on me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dixie Chicks’ song “Storm Out on the Sea” are beautiful and reflect the desire for freedom and love but also the fear of getting drowned in them. The first verse reflects the desire for freedom that the singer had from a young age when she watched the sailing ships. The ships symbolized freedom for her as the sails were like wings that rode the wind. She longs to be free but is held back by her fear of drowning in love as depicted in the chorus, “And lovin’ you’s like drowning in a storm out on the sea.”

The second verse reflects the fear that she has about being vulnerable in her love life. She has given her heart to her lover but is afraid that she will be left stranded as he never said he’d stay with her. She does not want to tie him down and lose him in the process, but at the same time, she is afraid of the loneliness that comes with it. The rain and the clouds that came low and lonely in the third verse reflect the sadness and the detachment that the singer is feeling. The final line where the lover turns his back on her shows that she has now realized that loving someone is also about being vulnerable and taking risks which she was not ready to take.

Overall, the song is about the singer's struggle with the fear of vulnerability in her romantic relationships, while at the same time, yearning for freedom and a deep connection with her partner.

Vintage Chicks. Love them

@frankiegth5409

I love Robin Macy at vocals... Songs like West Texas wind, their rendition of past the point of rescue, just a bit like me... Those songs have better value and have aged better than some the commercial chicks' hits... And unfortunately you can't even find them in Spotify and Natalie Maines and the Dixie chicks haven't carried them with them. So sad

Love the old chicks before Natalie. Don't get me wrong, with Natalie too, but this old country is ageless and priceless. I adore it

Thank you, Frankie!!
