Long Time Gone
Dixiechicks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Daddy sits on the front porch swinging,
Looking out on a vacant field.
Used to be filled with burley t'bacca.
Now he knows it never will.

My brother found work in Indiana,
Sister's a nurse at the old folks home.
Mama's still cooking too much for supper,
And me, I've been a long time gone.

Been a long time gone,
No, I ain't hoed a row since I don't know when.
Long time gone, and it ain't coming back again.

Delia plays that ol' church piano,
Sittin' out on her daddy's farm.
She always thought that we'd be together,
Lord, I never meant to do her harm.

Said she could hear me singin' in the choir,
Me, I heard another song.
I caught wind and hit the road runnin',
And Lord, I've been a long time gone.

Been a long time gone,
Lord, I ain't had a prayer since I don't know when.
Long time gone, and it ain't comin' back again.

Now me, I went to Nashville,
Tryin' to beat the big deal.
Playin' down on Broadway,
Gettin' there the hard way.
Living from a tip jar,
Sleeping in my car.
Hocking my guitar,
Yeah, I'm gonna be a star.

Now, me and Delia singing every Sunday,
Watching the children and the garden grow.
We listen to the radio to hear what's cookin',
But the music ain't got no soul.

Now they sound tired but they don't sound Haggard,
They've got money but they don't have Cash.
They got Junior but they don't have Hank.
I think, I think, I think, the rest is,
A long time gone,

No, I ain't hit the roof since I don't know when.
Long time gone, and it ain't coming back.

I said a long time gone,
No, I ain't honked the horn since I don't know when.
Long time gone, and it ain't coming back again.

I said a long time, long time, long time gone.
Well, it's been a long time.

Long time, long time, long time gone,
Oh, it's been a long time gone.

Long time, long time, long time gone.
Yeah, yeah.

Overall Meaning

The Dixie Chicks' song, "Long Time Gone," tells the story of a family living in the country whose lives have been influenced by the changes of the times. The opening verse describes a father who sits on the front porch, looking out on an empty field that used to be full of tobacco. He understands that times have changed, and this crop will never come back. The singer's brother has found work in Indiana, while her sister works at a nursing home. Mama, however, continues her routine of cooking too much every night. As for the singer herself, she has been gone for a long time.

In the second verse, the singer mentions Delia, a girl from her hometown whom she was romantically involved with. Delia played the piano at church, and the singer believed they would end up together. However, the singer hit the road, leaving Delia behind. She traveled to Nashville to make it as a musician, living out of her car and playing for tips on Broadway. Though she hasn't hit it big yet, she's still hopeful.

The final verse laments the state of country music, and how it's changed from the days of legends like Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Hank Williams. The singer notes that while today's musicians are wealthy, their songs lack the soul of the old school stars. Ultimately, the song speaks to a sense of longing and nostalgia for a simpler time, and a recognition that some things can never be recaptured.

Which makes sense as the third verse seems is more than a bit of an insult about the state of country musics when it was written
"We listen to the radio to hear what's cookin'
But the music ain't got no soul
Now they sound tired but they don't sound Haggard (Merle Haggard)
They've got money but they don't have Cash (Johnny Cash)
They got Junior but they don't have Hank (Hank Williams Sr.)
I think, I think, I think, the rest is
A long time gone
No, I ain't hit the roof since I don't know when
Long time gone, and it ain't coming back
I said a long time gone
No, I ain't honked the horn since I don't know when
Long time gone, and it ain't coming back again"

The song was written by bluegrass musician Darrell Scott, originally recorded on Scott's 2000 album  two years before The Chicks version was released.

Heard it about a million times and it still brings me fantastic joy every time

Long Time Gone is definitely one of my favorite songs by the Dixie Chicks. It's sad that they aren't as popular as they used to be. I'm still a fan of theirs to this day.

@dakelei

They would be if the "God and country" crowd hadn't turned on them so savagely.

@MateoLobo319

@Chris Davies yeah I know it's sad.

@freshfarmster44

@Chris Davies, You got that right, home of the free and land of the brave, but only if you believe in being free in the way we feel brave and pray.

@brentkelly9864

Technically, the song is "by" Darrell Scott, but The Chicks certainly helped popularize the tune. Great song and The Chicks rendition is wonderful.

@@freshfarmster44 Think as I think, do as I say but not as I do.

I'm a metal head, but man back in the early 2000's, that Home album was on my CD rotation constantly. So good. Love the bluegrass aesthetic. So yeah, that's my one CD I have in my collection that people are like "WTF, did a gf or someone leave this here?!", and I'm like no, man, lets listen to it!

@Mothermetalhead

Dude same though 😅

@hweber1620

Same 👌
