'Round About Midnight
Dizzy Gillespie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It begins to tell
'Round midnight, midnight
I do pretty well, till after sundown
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad
But it really gets bad
'Round midnight

Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories
When my heart is still with you
And ol' midnight knows it, too
When a quarrel we had needs mending
Does it mean that our love is ending
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart
And I'm out of my mind

Let our hearts take wings'
'Round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing
For your returning
Till our love is safe and sound
And old midnight comes around
Feelin' sad

Really gets bad
Round, Round, Round Midnight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dizzy Gillespie's "Round About Midnight" describe the feeling of being haunted by memories and emotions that recur at nightfall – a time of quiet introspection that can turn into a melancholic state of mind. The song begins with the singer saying how they are doing pretty well until after sundown when suppertime rolls around, and they start to feel sad. But it gets worse around midnight when memories start to flood their mind. Midnight is a symbol of the past that the singer can't escape, and that keeps them from moving on. They feel trapped in their own mind and emotions, incapable of letting go of their past and the person they used to love. The lyrics suggest that a quarrel they had may have contributed to their split, but they are still in love and need each other.

"Round About Midnight" is a ballad that reflects the mood of jazz music in the late 1940s. The lyrics were written by Johnny Mercer, who collaborated with Thelonious Monk to compose the melody. The song was first recorded by Cootie Williams in 1944, but it was the version by Miles Davis that became the most popular. Davis recorded the song for his album "Round About Midnight" in 1957, which is now considered a masterpiece of jazz music. The album marked a new phase in Davis's career, and it established him as one of the leading artists in the genre. The song was also covered by many other jazz musicians, including Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and John Coltrane.

Peace.

Ladies and gentlemen, there has been, to my knowledge, no one who’s been a bigger contributor to our music than our very exciting pianist, Mr. Thelonious Monk.

[applause]

He has served you in several different capacities, including…he’s a top instrumentalist. A great composer, arranger, leader. Bon vivant…and a doll.

[Dizzy banters with bandmates]

We’re going to play one of his compositions now that has become a standard amongst jazz musicians all around the world, and it’s called “Round Midnight”.

I've never seen Monk look self-conscious, even modest and humble. Very touching human moment--esp. on a tour during which Monk and Blakey were reportedly at complete odds. He also takes a beautiful solo on his most famous composition "Round Midnight" (interrupted by the jazz piano ad).

It's a shame that this particular recording has so many technical difficulties that it can't be enjoyed to its fullest
