Don
Dizzy Gillespie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ever since the lucky night I found you
I've hung around you just like a fool
Falling head and heels in love like a kid out of school.

My poor heart is in an awful state now
But it's too late now to call a halt

So if I become a nuisance it's all your fault!

Don't blame me for falling in love with you
I'm under your spell but how can I help it!
Don't' blame me!

Can't you see when you do the things you do!
If I can't conceal the thrill that I'm feeling,
Don't blame; me.

Ican't help it if that doggoned moon above
Makes me need someone like you to love!

Blame your kiss as sweet as a kiss can be
And blame all your charms that melt in my arms
But don't blame me.

I like every single thing about you
Without a doubt you are like a dream
In my mind I find a picture of us as a team

Ever since the hour of our meeting
I've been repeating a silly phrase
Hoping that you'll understand me one of these days.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk's song "Don't Blame Me" express the singer's love and admiration for someone they have fallen for. From the moment they met this person, they were smitten and have been unable to get them out of their head. Despite the singer's awareness of their own vulnerability, they can't help but succumb to the power of their affection. The singer is caught up in the whirlwind of their own emotions and wonders if the other person can see just how deeply they are in love.

The singer takes responsibility for their feelings, asserting that if they become a nuisance, it is all the other person's fault. Their love is powerful and all-consuming, and they can't help but feel the excitement and thrill of being in love. The singer also acknowledges the power of outside circumstances, such as the moon, to heighten their emotions and create a need to express their love.

Great album.

@ehnkidu

Thank you! I used to have this tape and lost it years ago. I was thinking about it today and hey, presto, you posted it! :)

@jazzalex22

Thank you for posting this!!!! God, this song always made me laugh, I love it so much. Dizzy was the man. Too bad we couldn't get great songs like this, all these days is the same ol crap: Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Eminem, Justin Bieber, LMFAO, Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Flo Rida, Wiz Khalifa, Kid Cudi, Adele, and Maroon 5. I'd trade all these artists in for Frank, Dino, Sammy, Bing, Dizzy, Miles, Satchmo, and Prima

@dariowestern

Don't write all modern music as crap. Lady Gaga, Kesha, Eminem, and Adele are pretty talented artists in their own right. Stop being so arrogant and small minded.

@charlesbarry6730

Dizzy performing a calypso.

@JohnFallonecuador

Poor Joe!

@SuperMichelFoucault

Don't be grumpy, i guess this generation is trying not to keep up with the Joneses, and when Dizzy is your neighbour, well, i agree, it's tough.
