I Can't Get Started*
Dizzy Gillespie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've flown around the world in a plane
I've settled revolutions in Spain
The North Pole I have charted, but I can't get
Started with you

Around the golf course I'm under par
And all the movies want me to star
I've got a house, a show place, but I get no
Place with you

You're so supreme, lyrics I write of you
Scheme, just for a sight of you
Dream, both day and night of you
And what good does it do?

In 1929 I sold short
In England I'm presented at court
But you've got me downhearted, cause I can't get
Started with you

You're so supreme, lyrics I write of you
Scheme, just for a sight of you

Dream, both day and night of you
And what good does it do?

Overall Meaning

Dizzy Gillespie's "I Can't Get Started" is a jazzy ballad that reflects the singer's frustration with his inability to win over a particular woman. The first verse highlights the many impressive accomplishments that the singer has achieved - flying around the world, settling revolutions in Spain, and charting the North Pole - but he still can't seem to woo the object of his affection. Similarly, the second verse lists all of the singer's tangible possessions, including a house and a showplace, but he still can't win the heart of the woman he desires.

The chorus shows his frustration with himself and the situation. He is infatuated with the woman and spends his time writing lyrics about her, scheming to see her, and dreaming of her day and night. However, despite all of this, he feels that he is getting nowhere.

The final verse mentions a specific year, 1929, and the singer admits that even though he has had some successes in his life, he feels downhearted because he hasn't been able to win over this one woman. The song ends with another chorus where he laments that his obsession with her is not doing any good.

Such pure harmony. Takes me back to my childhood when I first heard it. I loved it then; and I still love it today. Thank you for posting.

An amazing version! Dizzy stakes an early claim at jazz immortality, and wins.
