Man Next Door
Django Django Lyrics

Horace Andy

There is a man that live next door
In my neighborhood
In my neighborhood
And he gets me down...

He gets in so late at night
Always a fuss and fight
Always a fuss and fight
All through the night

I've got to get away from here
This is not a place for me to stay
I've got to take my family
We'll find a quiet place

Hear the pots and pans they fall
Bang against my wall
Bang against my wall
No rest at all

He gets in so late at night
Always a fuss and fight
Always a fuss and fight
All through the night

I've got to get away from here
This is not a place for me to stay

I've got to take my family
We'll find a quiet place

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Man Next Door" by Django Django featuring Horace Andy, tell the story of a troublesome and disruptive neighbor who causes distress and lack of sleep. The song is a commentary on the negative effect that living in close proximity to such an individual can have on one's life. The singer is clearly distressed, and in some ways, paralyzed by the constant noise and disturbance from the neighbor. He describes the neighbor's late-night behavior as "a fuss and fight/All through the night" and the sound of pots and pans that can be heard falling and banging against the wall. The singer has had enough and feels he needs to take action, declaring that "This is not a place for me to stay/I've got to take my family/We'll find a quiet place."

Horace Andy's soulful voice adds emphasis to the frustration expressed in the lyrics. His delivery evokes a sense of weariness and resignation, as if he has lived with these troubling circumstances for far too long. The repetition of the same phrase, "Always a fuss and fight" emphasizes the relentlessness of the disturbance and the sense of despair that the singer feels. The song provides commentary on the difficulties that people face when living in close proximity to others and the importance of finding a peaceful environment for oneself and one's family.

The original version of this song was legit about a man who gets back late most nights and attacks his wife. But when massive attack decided to cover it they saw it from the perspective of schizophrenia (the man next door). You are distracted throughout the day but you are alone at night your thoughts keep you awake. I suppose it gives the song a darker meaning than what was originally intended. Very interesting!

Edit: I suppose it could be interpreted as many different mental health conditions including insomnia, not just schizophrenia

Back when this album came out, I'd sit, get high and wish harm on my neighbour who could have been the inspiration for this song.
