I wonder if Tarantino completely scrapped scene ideas because he couldn't get the license to use a song. No substitute would work, and would rather rewrite the whole section and find something else. Then again, if Tarantino is the one that's essentially knockin' on your door requesting a song, good chance a specific reason, and should let him. :P

This might be the most "magical" moment in a Tarantino movie. I think the amount of emotion and heart in his movies is often undervalued, anyway, but this sequence is just so innocent and sincere in a very simple way. Rather beautiful contrast to the horrors to come.

I’ve seen this movie countless times but for the first time I just noticed how proud Schultz is to see Django carrying himself confidently and then Django tosses the old saddle off the horse and throws his own on that has a beautifully engraved “D” which he runs his hand over as Croce sings “I’ve got a name”

God how I love this scene! There are many great moments throughout this film, but there is one particular line that I adore. When Django and Schultz return with their bounties a man offers them to get inside and drink some coffee and "there even is some birthday cake!". It was hearth warming knowing that someone, even those part of the 'cash for flesh' bounty hunting business, can invite a black man in their home and offer him a cup of coffee and some birthday cake! While others would not even think of giving a piece of white cake to him.

I think it's a scene that helps establish the brotherhood between Django and Shultz. Dr. Shultz gives him a smile when Django picks up his new saddle, a writ of passage. Django is growing into his new life as a freeman and experiencing freedom for the first time. It shows without any dialogue that they are equals now (that slight nod they share before they set off on their journey), they are parallel and focused on their goal and working together. Plus the music is beautiful as is the majestic beauty of the American west. It's very uplifting! Gotta love a good montage! "I've got a name" something that resonates with a new freed man, under slavery your name and identity were stolen from you and Django has now earned it back. BRILLIANT!

I think more than anything else, this is the point of the movie when Django truly breaks free of his shackles and becomes his own man, all while a bigger narrative of freedom, legacy, and destiny plays in the background. The song is the final perfect touch for this powerful moment.

I loved this moment so much that I forced myself to memorize the lyrics so I could search for the song later.

I love the use of music in this film. Here, the music beautifully emphasises the Doc and Django's respect and friendship and yet the sequences with Calvin Candie are eerily devoid of music in order to increase the tension of the scenes and it works beautifully.

What i love most about Django is that the movie is in parts, part 1 and part 2, the first half has such a different tone from when they go to Mississippi, when they hit Mississippi its a different feeling movie, the first half is about liking and getting to know the characters.

Imagine a time when music like this was just released. Casey Kasem might have just played in his countdown for the first time. You hear it on the AM station sitting in the back of your Buick station wagon and beg your mom to turn it up on the way to the bank, the dry cleaner or some endless errand. You had no air conditioning. You only had one speaker. Your sweaty legs stuck to the vinyl on your way down Main Street. This was the 70’s. It was a magical time. The best time of my life.

Brilliant cinema. Scorsese was probably the original gangsta when it came to using studio recorded music in film...(aside from "Rock Around The Clock" in "Blackboard Jungle").
All this besides... this is pieced together so beautifully. If Tarantino had anything to do with the way this was edited...then mad props to him as both a director and editor.
Sound and picture fall together like melting butter on warm bread.

This scene is especially beautiful when you take into account how the lyrics relate to Django. Think about his perspective. Django, being a slave, has been utterly dehumanized and abused from birth, yet here comes Schultz, who not only frees him, but gives him clothes, food, a horse, trains him in weapons, and agrees to help him rescue the love of django’s life. Most of all he is the first white man who not only considers Django to be a person, but an equal and almost like a son. It gives the lyrics of “I got a name…” a whole new meaning. Django is finally starting on his journey as a free man with Schultz’s help.

I remember the first time I saw this scene, after Django ditches that rediculous French Baroque outfit and appears in this. I think I actually said aloud "now that's more like it."

I think Tarantino would make bank of a 2 hour movie of just Django and Schultz during the 3 months in the mountains. I'd watch it twice in theatres then buy it.
