Born into a poor family in Maceió (capital of Alagoas, Northeast Brazil), Djavan formed the group Luz, Som, Dimensão (LSD - "Light, Sound, Dimension"), playing Beatles covers. In 1973 Djavan moved to Rio de Janeiro and started singing in local nightclubs. After competing in several festivals he gained attention and recorded the album A Voz, o Violão e a Arte de Djavan in 1976. The album included the song "Flor de Lis" which became one of his most memorable hits. Albums that followed included his other musical influence, African music, and additional hits followed like "Açaí", "Sina" and "Samurai", which featured Stevie Wonder's harmonica. His best known compositions are: "Meu Bem Querer", "Oceano", "Faltando um Pedaço", "Esquinas", "Seduzir", "Pétala", "Lilás", "A Ilha", "Fato Consumado", "Álibi", "Azul" and "Serrado".
His songs have been recorded by Al Jarreau, Carmen McRae, The Manhattan Transfer, and, in Brazil by Gal Costa, Dori Caymmi, Nana Caymmi, Lenine, João Bosco, Chico Buarque, Daniela Mercury, Ney Matogrosso, Dominguinhos, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Johnny Alf, and other artists. The 1988 Epic Records single, "Stephen's Kingdom", featured a guest appearance from Stevie Wonder.
In 1999, his live concert double-volume album, Ao Vivo, has sold 1.2 million copies and the song, "Acelerou" became the Best Brazilian song of the year at 2000 Latin Grammy Awards.

Judia De Mim
Djavan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Seu eu não sou merecedor desse amor
Se eu choro
Será que você não notou
É a você que eu adoro
Carrego esse meu sentimento
Sem ressentimento
É, a cana quando é boa
Se conhece pelo nó
Assovio entre os dentes
Uma cantiga dolente
Entre cacos e cavacos
Sobrei eu, duro nos cascos
Bem curtindo pelo cheiro dos sovacos
Judia de mim
E quem dança qualquer dança
A bonança não sabe o que é
Desconhece a esperança
No falso amor leva fé
Quem de paz se alimenta
Se contenta com migalhas
Não se aflige e corrige
As próprias falhas
The opening lines of Djavan's song "Judia De Mim" immediately grab the listener's attention with a sense of guilt and unworthiness. The singer addresses his lover as "Judia," which in Portuguese means "Jewess," using it metaphorically to convey a sense of condemnation for his own shortcomings. He wonders if he deserves her love and attention, questioning his own value as a partner. The lines that follow reveal the depth of his emotion as he confesses his love and devotion to her. He tells her that he carries this love in his heart without any resentment, hoping that she notices his love despite his imperfections.
The second verse talks about recognizing the value of something by its worth. The reference to sugarcane being recognized by its knot implies that one can identify true love by the struggles and challenges it poses. The mention of whistling between the teeth and the sadness in the song further suggests that love can be a bittersweet experience. The subsequent lines are an expression of self-awareness, where he describes himself as a "hard-shelled guy," who enjoys the scent of sweat, leaving him standing still among rubble, surviving with what he has.
Overall, "Judia De Mim" is a passionate yet melancholic song about the complexities of love and the struggles that come with it. Djavan's beautiful composition and soulful voice make this song a timeless classic that continues to inspire and move listeners.

O que é o Djavan? o cara pega uma música que não é sua e dela se apropria com todo o direito. É realmente um intérprete excepcional, um dos maiores da história da música brasileira. E nem estou falando do fantástico violonista e arranjador que ele também é.
