Born into a poor family in Maceió (capital of Alagoas, Northeast Brazil), Djavan formed the group Luz, Som, Dimensão (LSD - "Light, Sound, Dimension"), playing Beatles covers. In 1973 Djavan moved to Rio de Janeiro and started singing in local nightclubs. After competing in several festivals he gained attention and recorded the album A Voz, o Violão e a Arte de Djavan in 1976. The album included the song "Flor de Lis" which became one of his most memorable hits. Albums that followed included his other musical influence, African music, and additional hits followed like "Açaí", "Sina" and "Samurai", which featured Stevie Wonder's harmonica. His best known compositions are: "Meu Bem Querer", "Oceano", "Faltando um Pedaço", "Esquinas", "Seduzir", "Pétala", "Lilás", "A Ilha", "Fato Consumado", "Álibi", "Azul" and "Serrado".
His songs have been recorded by Al Jarreau, Carmen McRae, The Manhattan Transfer, and, in Brazil by Gal Costa, Dori Caymmi, Nana Caymmi, Lenine, João Bosco, Chico Buarque, Daniela Mercury, Ney Matogrosso, Dominguinhos, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Johnny Alf, and other artists. The 1988 Epic Records single, "Stephen's Kingdom", featured a guest appearance from Stevie Wonder.
In 1999, his live concert double-volume album, Ao Vivo, has sold 1.2 million copies and the song, "Acelerou" became the Best Brazilian song of the year at 2000 Latin Grammy Awards.

Lobisomem
Djavan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Pelo vento frio que começou a bater
Pela paz interior do gado
Descuidado caiu do céu um pingo,
Vai chover
Sou um bicho perdido
Um der acuado num canto do abrigo
Um lobisomem...
Onde Deus se flagra imaginando:
Oh ! que dor me dá de ver a terra se ferrar
Tá no índio, no grego,
Na pele do mundo
A mancha envenenada do ciúme
Assisto tudo sem ver,
Sem interesse maior
Vivo longe de casa
E nunca pensei em voltar
Assisto tudo sem crer.
Nada me toca
Dia triste, quantos ais
Onde estais ó meu amor ?
Com quem mais posso
Pensar no esplendor
Dia triste, dor a mais
Esplendor que se desfaz
Noutros ais
Quando se sofre de amor.
The lyrics of Djavan's song "Lobisomem" are poetic and enigmatic, touching on themes of loneliness, disconnection, and the struggle to find meaning in a world full of pain and confusion. The first stanza describes the approach of a cold wind and the inner peace of cattle, before a raindrop falls from the sky and signals that it will soon begin to rain. The singer compares himself to a lost animal, a cornered creature hiding away in a shelter, a "lobisomem" or werewolf.
In the second verse, the lyrics become more surreal, as the singer imagines a dark and distant night where God is "caught" in the act of imagining the suffering of the world. The poisoned stain of jealousy is compared to a virus that infects everyone, from the indigenous peoples of Brazil to the Greeks of ancient times. The singer watches all of this unfold but feels disconnected from it all, living far from home and never thinking of returning. The final lines express a sense of hopelessness and longing for an absent love, and the pain that comes with the realization that beauty can be fleeting and that love can cause great sorrow.
Overall, the lyrics of "Lobisomem" are haunting and evocative, capturing a sense of existential despair and the quest for meaning in a world full of challenges and uncertainty.
